I read Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires #1) a bunch of years ago when I was looking for something to fill the Sookie Stackhouse-sized hole left in my vampire book loving heart. I fell in love with the strong, plucky, bacon-loving Merit and her sire, the enigmatic Ethan Sullivan. Over the years they have been through more than any one couple should ever have to go through. No really. It's been RIDIC. But here we are, at the final Chicagoland Vampires book, and it seems that their future might be happy, full, and pretty damn perfect after all. 

This last book is absolutely everything you could want or need in a series ender. With thirteen books under her belt, Chloe Neill has brought back nearly all of the side characters that made the Chicagoland world so full and rich, for at least a little glimpse. There are at least a few mentions of the other Chicago vampire masters, Scott and Morgan as well as Merit's Red Guard partner Jonah. We get to see Gabriel, the Apex of the North American Central Pack call Merit "Kitten" one last time. The Ombuddies - Jeff, Catcher, Mallory and Merit's grandfather - are on hand to solve one last Chicago plight. And the Cadogan vampires who we've come to expect to have Merit and Ethan's back - Malik, Luc and Lindsey - are kicking ass and taking names. 

Every one of the loose threads are tied up. Even threads I didn't realize were loose were tightened to an incredibly satisfying degree. Weeks after I finished reading Blade Bound, I thought back on the events that unfolded during the course of the book, and I realized how masterfully Chloe Neill wove those finalities into the story. I didn't even realize they were happening until later when I was thinking about all the characters I had grown to love and how they had all found this amazing life alongside Merit and Ethan. 

And, of course, Merit and Ethan are going to have an amazing life. We get to see them fight side-by-side, and puzzle out a new problem, and argue and make up and GET MARRIED. And yes - the big question that we've all had for years now about the prophecy that Gabriel made is answered. And I promise, it's a satisfying resolution to a story line that's kept us hanging for a long time now. 

I realize I'm being rather vague with my review, but the events that unfold in Blade Bound are a continuation from the events in Midnight Marked (Chicagoland Vampires #12). So, I can't go into specifics without giving away some pretty big spoilers. Suffice it to say that Blade Bound has tons of action, danger and humor. And the romance pegs the swoon meter. Merit and Ethan have found this incredible love and respect for one another that can only be borne from all that they have encountered and survived together, and that shows in their words and their actions. 

Thankfully, Chloe Neill seems as reluctant to leave the Chicagoland Vampire world as we are, and she announced at the end of Blade Bound that there will be a spin-off featuring certain characters from the series. If you want to know who they are, well... you'll have to read the book. :)

Phantom Kiss is the prelude to the final Chicagoland Vampires novel that Chloe Neill will write. I have to thank her for giving us this extra glimpse into Cadogan House life, because I think I'm already going through withdraw, and I haven't even read Blade Bound (Chicagoland Vampires #13) yet. Every little bit helps, and Phantom Kiss had a little bit of all the parts of this series that make it so awesome for me.

Of course there's a mystery to be solved. There always is, and Ethan and Merit are a well-oiled machine now. They are an impressive team, especially when they join efforts with the Ombuddies - Merit's BFF and witch Mallory, her sorcerer husband Catcher, the tech wiz and tiger shifter Jeff and the leader of the gang, Merit's grandfather. In Phantom Kiss, they also engage the services of necromancer Annabelle since there's a ghost hanging around who is particularly nasty.

In addition to a mini-mystery to solve and a good reason to get the Ombuddies together, there's wedding shenanigans afoot. Merit and Ethan are two months away from their wedding, and Phantom Kiss opens with them attending a bridal shower thrown for them by Merit's mother. Yes - it's as awkward as it sounds. And amusing. And sweet. The way Ethan loves Merit now is so amazing.

And just because Ethan and Merit have been together for awhile, it doesn't mean they've become complacent. They still are smoking hot in between the sheets when they can find a moment between saving Chicago and almost dying. Like, seriously. Hot.

Phantom Kiss was a quick read with so much paranormal goodness in it. And any time I get to spend with one of my most favorite paranormal couples ever is time well spent.

The Chicagoland Vampires series has been a staple on my TBR for a long time. It is one of a precious few go-to series whenever I need a paranormal romance or urban fantasy fix. So, it's hard for me to believe that, after this one, I will only be reading one more new book in this series before we have to say goodbye to these beloved characters for good. 

It's a good thing that Chloe Neill does not go quietly into the night. 

Things are, by no means, winding down for Merit and Ethan. In Midnight Marked, they continue to lock horns with the odious Adrian Reed who has hatched a new plan for Chicagoland's supernatural population. He's made this battle personal by threatening Merit and goading Ethan. And, I can honestly say, I've never hated a bad guy in this series more than this one. 

In addition to getting to the bottom of Reed's plan, there are a lot of other side stories playing out in Midnight Marked. Things between Merit and the Red Guard - and particularly her partner Jonah - are still not great, since she refused to spy on Ethan for them. I absolutely LOVE that Merit refuses to compromise her morals and her relationship with Ethan for anyone or anything. 

Reed's activities put the tentative alliance between Gabriel's shifters and Ethan's vampires to their greatest test yet. Any CLV book that includes a lot of Gabriel Keene is a good one, and there is plenty of him in Midnight Marked. Gabriel and Ethan both have good reason to be angry at one another in this case, and their situation is evidence that sometimes you have to make hard choices when you're in charge of so many others. I don't envy either of them (but I still love both of them).

The two biggest questions that fans have been dying to know answers to are, Will Ethan finally propose to Merit? and When will the prophecy about Ethan and Merit's child come to pass? Of course, I can't tell you if either of those questions are answered in Midnight Marked - you'll just have to buy the book and find out for yourself. But, I will say that both topics are discussed at length, both between Merit and Ethan and Merit and Mallory. 

Mallory - "My God, do I want to see Ethan facing his first loaded diaper. And, can you imagine him dealing with milk puke?"

Merit - "I think he'll be a good dad. I mean, for a four-hundred-year-old pretentious master vampire."

So, yeah - there's a lot going on. But, there's tons of action, lots of mystery solving, some awesome fight scenes, and - the best part - Ethan "Darth" Sullivan. For a vampire who was originally so hell bent on fronting for people in regards for his feelings for Merit, he certainly has gotten over all that. His words are so heart-meltingly romantic, it is impossible to not be reduced to a puddle of goo every time he opens his mouth.

"Fear, my Sentinel, is inevitable. It is one of our more important instincts. It keeps us alive. Fighting through the fear is a choice. That's the choice you've made since that April night one year ago. That's the choice you'll continue to make, because that's what's inside you. I love you, and I believe in you, more than I have ever believed in anyone. And it is absolutely terrifying."

I have my theories on what will play out in the final Chicagoland Vampires book. Waiting for it to come out is so bittersweet. I can't wait to find out what happens, and yet, I don't want it to get here, because then it will truly be all over.

I love the direction that Chloe Neill has taken her Chicagoland Vampires series. After eleven books, you have to expect the characters to grow and change as they go through different experiences together. And, yet, I always see glimpses of the characters they were in book 1 shining through from time to time. Which is fortunate, because I fell in love with Merit, Ethan, Mallory and the gang from the very beginning.

Ethan is freaking out - in his very controlled Ethan way - because it appears his maker Balthasar is back from the dead. And, he. Is. Pissed. As if a centuries-old cranky vampire isn't enough, now Ethan and Cadogan has a major criminal enterprise gunning for them after they step in to help out Morgan. Just another day at the office. 

Let's face it. I read this series because... METHAN. Ethan and Merit are one of my favorite bookish couples of all time. Especially now that they seem to have finally found their groove. The drama in the Chicagoland Vampires books no longer come from Ethan and Merit's on again, off again relationship. The drama now comes entirely from the situations developing around them as their world continues to adapt to the realization that supernatural beings are real. 

Although relationship drama is good sometimes, to be honest, I'm really liking the lack of it in this series now. The various people and organizations out there vying to take down Cadogan House cause enough danger and peril that I get to read about Ethan in uber-protective mode when it comes to Merit, which is SO much better. Protective, concerned alpha male Ethan is so hot. 

"You're my future wife and the mother of my future child. I will well protect you against any threat, living, dead, or undead, just as I promised in my oath to this house."

Just when Ethan and Merit have conquered the GP debacle and Ethan is starting out in the newly created American Masters group, it seems a new criminal empire called The Circle has cropped up. Even worse, it seems to have sunk its claws into Morgan and Navarre House. Navarre owes a debt they're having a hard time paying. There's been no love lost between Cadogan and Navarre, but that doesn't stop Ethan from offering assistance. 

It was so good to hear from Morgan again. He was a much more prominent character in earlier books, then almost disappeared with only a mention here and there. Morgan is a fascinating character. He's a green Master. He's kind of the "bad boy" Master of the three in Chicago. He's quiet and stoic and he has this weird mental connection with Merit that's never been explained. I was so excited that Morgan was back and that we were going to get to spend some time with him. 

"Look up," he said, tilting my chin upward. "There is always light." Morgan said quietly. "The stars are always shining, even if we can't see them."

Ethan is usually very composed, but when his ruthless maker Balthasar shows up and starts wreaking havoc around Chicago, Ethan kind of loses it a bit. It was good to see him so affected by something. Especially when Balthasar comes after Merit in a way that really violates her. In addition to Merit, Ethan is completely shaken by this, and I really liked seeing him off kilter. 

The usual characters of Mallory, Catcher, Jeff, Chuck, Luc and Lindsay are present in this book too. They all have their roles to play, especially Mallory and Catcher. It's good to see they've gotten past the nasty business Mallory was into a few books back, and relationships have been knitted back together again. 

I will NEVER get tired of the Chicagoland Vampires series. As long as Chloe writes them, I'll read them.

It's pretty incredible to think about the fact that 10 books in, the Chicagoland Vampires series is still going strong. Each new addition continues to be amazing - I'm always looking forward to the next one. It seemed like my wait for Blood Games was exceptionally long, given the ending of Wild Things. But, finally, the wait is over.

Ethan is moving forward with his challenge for the right to rule the GP, and Merit continues to do what she does best - protect the citizens of Chicago from all the bad things. In this case, there's a serial killer on the loose and the killings have a paranormal ring to them. About the time Ethan, Merit and Jonah are called in by the CPD to help, things in the race for the GP start getting weird. Darius is acting strangely and Ethan is being blackmailed and he refuses to talk to Merit about any of it. Just when Merit thought they had their relationship figured out, she realizes that centuries of stubbornness can't be fixed that quickly. 

Blood Games had everything I love about this series. There was not one but two fantastic mysteries to be solved - first is that of who is killing the citizens of Chicago and displaying them in curious positions. Second is that of who is manipulating Darius into acting out of character. Chloe Neill does everything right in regards to the secrets and subterfuge. It was hard for me to figure out who the real culprits were and what drove them to their actions, and I love it when I can't see the ending coming until it's smacking me in the face. Details and clues are slowly brought to light around the ops room table and in off-site meetings between the Ombuddies and the vampires. The pacing is perfect. 

One of my favorite parts about Blood Games is that we got to see into the inner workings of Cadogan House more than we have in quite awhile. A lot of time is spent in the house as Ethan prepares for the response to his challenge of Darius' rule. We see Margot, Helen, Malik, and all the other vampires that make up Cadogan as they all rally around their Master. We see a lot of Luc and Lindsey in Blood Games too. Their relationship has also come a very long way since the beginning, and I love seeing them together now. 

But, Ethan and Merit are really why we all keep coming back, right? It's their relationship that has catapulted us through ten books now and keeps us begging for more. The fact that Merit - this vampire of barely a year - has completely changed this 400-year-old master is the stuff of romantic legends. It's clear at this point how much they both love and respect and adore each other. And, thankfully, those things don't negate relationship troubles. Ethan can still act like an ass. Merit can still be overbearing. And that makes me love them even more.  And, just because they are both now comfortable with their place in each other's lives doesn't mean that Chloe Neill skirts around the sexy times. There's this one scene... well, let's just say that Merit and Ethan don't do sleepy morning sex. Everything about them is passion and intensity, and thankfully it doesn't seem to be fading in the least.

We also see a lot more of Jonah in Blood Games. Ethan reluctantly relinquishes some of his partnering duties to Merit's RG partner, so the spotlight shone on Merit's and Jonah's working relationship, as well as on more of the inner workings of the RG. They've fallen into a very comfortable place where they work in synch with each other and don't shy away from snarking and teasing. Jonah's become one of my favorite side characters, and I hope we see more of him moving forward. I anticipate we will, since the absolutely CLV WORLD-SHATTERING ending to Blood Games will have foundation-shaking repercussions to the RG and all the vampire houses.

No, Blood Games didn't end like I thought it would, but wow. It was so much better than I had imagined. It's clear that Chloe Neill is writing for the long haul, as the world these amazing characters live in continuously shifts and changes, all for the better. If you were worried about the stories becoming flat and stagnant, have no fear. Chloe Neill knows just how to rock you and keep you eager for the next book so you can see what happens next. Ten books in, and I assure you, there is absolutely no sign of me ever abandoning this series.

One would think that by the ninth installment of the Chicagoland Vampires Series that the stories would be getting stale or ridiculous and our obsession with “Methan” would have run its course.

Wild Things was, in my opinion, the best book yet in this incredible series.

(There will be teeny spoilers from previous installments in the Chicagoland Vampires Series. Sorry, but, by the ninth book, it’s unavoidable – please don’t be mad!)

When we last saw our favorite Cadogan House vampires, Ethan was being encouraged to make himself scarce before the Chicago PD came to arrest him for killing a fellow vampire in self-defense. As much as he hates to do it, Ethan and Merit decide to hide out at the Breckenridge estate. Their self-imposed exile soon becomes a huge inconvenience as supernatural groups all over the city are attacked, and members of each group kidnapped – including Gabriel Keene’s shifters. To try and make things copacetic between vampires and shifters, Gabe asks Ethan and Merit to investigate the attacks and find the kidnapped victims. And, of course, in the middle of all this, a favor Merit promised in exchange for some help is called in, and the ramifications could spell the end of her and Ethan.

Chloe Neill has done a brilliant job planting seeds and letting them slowly grow over time until, before you even realize it, they’ve turned into something amazing. Remember that intriguing prophecy that Gabriel mentioned to Merit in Twice Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires #3) about a baby with Ethan’s eyes that wasn’t Ethan? CLV superfans have been waiting with bated breath for some movement on this. It’s been mentioned once or twice since then, but in Wild Things, we finally, FINALLY hear more about it, including the revealing of it to Ethan. The best part is Ethan’s reaction. I think I read that part three times. And, what’s even better, is there’s still more to come on this subject.

The corruption of the GP was introduced early in the series, with a much finer point put upon it in Drink Deep (Chicagoland Vampires #5). Even though Cadogan House is no longer a member, the GP is still trying to flex on them. Based on actions taken in Wild Things, there’s hope that the GP’s mafia mentality may soon come to an end, although most assuredly, not without a fight.

After all this time, we still get a few delightful surprises in Wild Things. A never-before-seen brand of sup is revealed (and they’re pretty creepy, too), and believe it or not, we finally get the Librarian’s name.

Very nearly all our favorites from CLV books past are featured at least a little. The original Scoobies – Merit, Catcher, Mallory and Jeff – team up again, many times with assistance from Ethan. Luc and Lindsey are there with their usual snark (Luc always has the best one-liners), Malik offers stability and support, and Jonah once again backs Merit up in an RG capacity. We even catch up with Seth Tate, who we’ve not seen since Biting Cold (Chicagoland Vampires #6).

And, there’s no way I can talk about favorites without mentioning the shifters. As you might be able to tell from the name of the book, The North American Pack plays a very prominent role. Gabe, his wife Tanya and his baby boy are front and center nearly the entire way through the book. We are also blessed with appearances from Nick Breckenridge, his brothers, his father, den mother Berna (pun very much intended), Fallon and new hottie shifter Damien, who serves as Gabe’s muscle.

Without a doubt, though, the best part of Wild Things is Merit and Ethan. With all the stopping and starting of their relationship through the first six books in this series, it sometimes felt like we’d never get to this place of stability and comfort. Ethan is finally not afraid to show ANYONE that he’s desperately in love with Merit, even though his PDAs embarrass her to no end. The sureness of their relationship is a wonderful addition. And, thankfully, that doesn’t in any way mean a tempering of the passion. Holy hotness – When Ethan and Merit set their mind to doing something, they do it well and good. It’s fan-freaking-tastic.

If you’re someone who may have started the series early on, but hasn’t finished yet, let this be your call to action. Because, for as much as I LOVED Wild Things, I get the impression that we haven’t seen anything yet.

Reading Biting Bad was kind of like coming home after being away for awhile. All my favorite things were there - Merit, Ethan, Gabriel, Luc, Cadogan House, Mallocakes. Burrowing myself in another book in which Merit and Ethan find themselves in peril yet again was the highlight of my week. Goodness, I love this series. 

Merit and Ethan are just trying to have a normal Valentine's Day for cripes sake. But, McKetrick and his band of merry goons seem hell bent on making sure that doesn't happen. Riots and attacks on important vampire-related buildings are happening seemingly randomly over Chicago. Humans are vilifying vampires to the point of extreme violence. And Merit needs to get to the bottom of it before anyone else dies. And before hers and Ethan's Valentine's Day is completely ruined. 

Ethan and Merit are finally in a comfortable place regarding their relationship. With all they've been through together, it's about time. Although it's not as hot and filled with sexual tension as it once was, the familiarity they have with each other is still nice. What's going on around them takes more of a center stage when we aren't constantly fretting over whether they'll still be together at the end. We know they will be and there's a measure of comfort that comes in that knowledge. And, as an added bonus, we get to see Ethan get romantic, which truly is something special.

"I have eternal life," he said. "But you are my undying passion." He put his hands on my cheek and kissed me deeply. There was passion in his kiss, in the nip of his tongue, but this kiss was about promise. About tenderness. About love. "I love you, Caroline Evelyn Merit."

I really enjoyed getting to know Scott Grey better in Biting Bad. We see much more of him in this book than in any other. We also see a lot of Jonah, which is awesome. I've loved him ever since Drink Deep. 

Getting to see some previously peripheral characters more means we don't see some of our usual favorites much. The Ombuddies are seen only sporadically, as are the shifters.  I also missed hanging out with Luc, Lindsey and Malik. 

But, we did see some more of Mallory, which I appreciated. As much as I hated her there for a few books, she's worming her way back into my affections. 

Holy foreshadowing, Batman. There's tons of it in Biting Bad. If you're a fan of the series, you'll recognize it. I think some big things are going to go down in the next book or two. And that excites the hell out of me.

How does Chloe Neill continue to create book after book in this series and make each one as good as the last? I don't find this series slowing down at all. It's certainly different than it was back in the first or second book, but it's a good different. And an expected different. I would never expect these characters to remain unchanging after all that's happened.

 Biting Bad rocked my socks. It'll rock yours too.

Can I just say here that Gabe is probably my most favorite supporting character in this series? I love his nickname for Merit and the rapport he has with Ethan. And, he plays strip poker. Regularly. Oh, to have a seat at that table.  

Anyhow, I digress. Speaking of shifters, HOUSE RULES is super special for several reasons, but one of the biggest is that we FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY find out what kind of animal Jeff Christopher turns into when he shifts. And, I have to tell you that I was surprised. And delighted.

If there was an Ass-Kicking Chicks Club, Merit would be the president, secretary and treasurer all in one. And, not just because of her fighting skills. There actually wasn't a lot of physical battles in this book - not as many as in previous books, anyway. It's the Merit essence that impresses me the most. She tries to do the right thing, succeeds most of the time, but not always. She doesn't back down from a fight, especially when she thinks she's right. Even when she has to stand up to the people she loves. 

It seems as if Merit and Ethan are finally on the right track. I'm thankful that, even though it's been a hard road and they really do deserve to be together, things aren't all puppies and rainbows. They still screw up and piss each other off. They are like the alpha couple with normal couple problems. It's very refreshing and relatable. 

After taking the front and center stage in the last two books, Mallory and Catcher are supporting characters this time around. It's a good thing - I think I needed a break from all their angst.

The side story is Merit's involvement in the Red Guard. Will she go through with it? Will she tell Ethan about it? And, if Ethan finds out, will he kick Jonah's ass for being her partner? All those questions are ones that have been posed in previous books and are now answered in HOUSE RULES. Many things come full circle, but thankfully, since we have a few books left in this amazing series, more questions and problems are posed at the end. It wouldn't be a CV book without those.

I know an audiobook is a good one when I literally have to talk myself out of my car in the morning when I get to work. It does something like, "Okay, Krista. Get out of the car. Turn off the radio. Ooo - as soon as this chapter is over. No! You're already 5 minutes late. Get out of the damn car! Okay. Wait! This is getting good! GAH!"

This was one of the best Chicagoland Vampires books yet. Which is really refreshing, because when series have a long run, it's easy for the plots to get tired, the characters to get annoying and the twists to get hokey. Not only do none of those adjectives apply to Biting Cold, this book is actually quite the opposite. Each one just gets better and better. 

*WARNING* Spoilers from Drink Deep are ahead, so if you haven't read it, you might not want to keep going here. 

One would think that Merit and Ethan would have it all figured out by now. Especially after the ending of Drink Deep. I know I thought they would. I was hoping, anyway. But, thankfully, Ms. Neill knows what we need better than we do. The Ethan we've all come to know and love is still an ass from time to time, and thank goodness for that. 

But, Merit has turned a corner in Biting Cold. She has fortified her heart and she knows what she wants. And, damned if she isn't finally ready to fight for it. Man, is it awesome seeing her finally give as good as she gets. And, I think that fire and spirit in her is what Ethan fell in love with in the first place. 

The big reveal is that we finally find out exactly what Mayor Tate is - what type of supernatural being. And, this could've been one of those hokey plot devices used to string us along for another few books, but I have to say that the way in which his nature was revealed, the mythology surrounding it, and how he is used to further the story is so creative. I've never read anything quite like it before. 

I'm so so so glad that Mallory didn't get off the hook easily. I would've been disappointed if her actions were swept under the rug and forgiven in haste in order to move things along. This chick did some very bad things. Things that I don't think that I, personally, could ever forgive her for. Apparently, Merit has the same misgivings as I. 

You know, I mentioned to a friend awhile ago that I thought that the Chicagoland Vampires series has a lot of Buffy-esque qualities to it. A cute, ass-kicking heroine with lots of snarky comebacks; a witchy BFF who tries to destroy the world; a moody quasi-boyfriend who dies, and then comes back. So, if you loved Buffy, then you will most undoubtedly love this series. Heck - even if you didn't love Buffy, you should give Merit and the gang a try. Because, this is the best urban fantasy series I've ever read. (And, I've read A LOT!)

Book #140 - Drink Deep (Chicagoland Vampires #5)

The only reason I'm not giving this book five full stars is due to a distinct lack of one particular person. Ethan. Freaking. Sullivan. Other than that, once again, Chloe Neill has delivered another fantastic book in the Chicagoland Vampires series.

Merit would really like some time to grieve. Just a few months to wallow and sulk. But, some freaky things start happening in her city - things that do not bode well for the supernatural community. The humans are freaking out, the new mayor dumps her grandfather and to make matters even worse, the GP's receiver is in town and making life miserable for all the Cadogan vampires. So much for wallowing. Merit has to go to work again, and this time with a new partner.

One of the things I love the most about Neill's CV series is the world and how all the different types of supes interact and live together. I've read plenty of books before that had vamps, weres and faeries all in the same place, but these are some of the best. In Drink Deep, we get a view of the elusive faery queen, and man, is she nuts. We also see more of the river nymphs, the lake siren, sorcerers, shifters, and of course, vamps. It sounds like it would be confusing, but somehow, it's not.

Merit is full of her usual piss and vinegar, but the events of the previous book have given her a softer, sadder edge. It's a new side to her. This was a much more emotional book than the previous ones. For both our characters and for the reader. Some events were so frustrating that I wanted to cry from being so mad. Some were so sad that I wanted to cry from being so... well, sad. Thankfully, Neill's characteristic snark and witty dialog were still present to give the reader a bit of a lift from the decidedly somber mood.

After Hard Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires #4), I Tweeted that I didn't know what to do next. Chloe Neill's response was, "Read Drink Deep!" How right she was. It was the cure for what ailed me.

Book #131 - Hard Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires #4)

Seriously? I mean, SERIOUSLY?? By the end of Hard Bitten, Ms. Neill had left me a spineless puddle of goo. My brain was scrambled. Still is, actually.

For Merit, it's pretty much SSDD - some unknown group out there is trying to wreak havoc on the city of Chicago and blame the vampires for it along the way. She and Ethan are enlisted by the mayor to find out what's going on and put a stop to it. Meanwhile, Ethan's boss is in the house breathing down his neck. Which doesn't make Merit's job any easier. Especially since she and Ethan are still trying to wade through the weird relationship waters.

I just don't even know what to say about Hard Bitten. It was an incredible book. Merit was amazing as usual. Ethan was broody as usual. His wooing of her was so sweet. I loved seeing that part of him. The regret and the sadness - it was a nice change.

I really can't say anything more than that. The ending - well, it was unexpected and... unexpected. Although I loved this book, as I have all the others in the series, I'm just not sure where it will go after this one. I haven't started book #5 because I'm afraid the magic will be gone. Gosh darn it, but these Chicagoland Vampires books are so much FUN!

The shifters are in town and Merit and Ethan are offered up as personal bodyguards for the head shifter himself, Gabriel Keene. Unfortunately, since someone is trying to kill Gabriel, that means that our favorite Cadogan vampires' lives are in danger as well. Luckily, they have each other as back-up.

Twice Bitten was AWESOME! My only gripe about the second Chicagoland Vampire book was the distinct lack of kissing between Merit and Ethan. The sexual tension between those two was killing me. K-I-L-L-I-N-G me. So, in Twice Bitten, things get better. And then things get really better. And then things suck again. And then things get better. It was so good!

What other book has reduced me to such a blathering idiot? There's not much more I can say that I haven't said already. Neill's wit and charm is present on every page. Twice Bitten was different in that it was also very emotionally charged. Merit was happy and sad and pissed and so was I. Ethan was broody and snarky and chivalrous, and it made me love him even more than I already did.

You know, there's nothing intellectual about this series. It's not necessarily thought provoking or life changing. But, my goodness, is it enjoyable. I find myself getting so lost in these books. I have such a good time reading them and getting involved in the characters' lives. Neill has created a wonderful world here with fantastic supernatural characters. It's a rare thing that I have so much fun reading as I did with Twice Bitten.

Do you like books with snarky, ass-kicking chicks, loads of sexual tension between said chick and a super hot master vampire, an incredible and interesting supporting cast and a well-spun mystery? Then, really - what are you waiting for? This is one of the smartest series I've read in a long time, and I am thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it while it lasts.

In the second Chicagoland Vampires book, Merit is asked by her liege Ethan Sullivan to reenter her parents' high brow society in an effort to try and find out who is organizing raves and threatening to expose them to the outside world. Merit and Ethan have to work together to not only overcome the newest threat to her new life, but to keep a lid on whatever it is they have between them.

Seriously, people - I am completely in love with this series right now. Neill is a fabulous author. She is engaging and witty and hysterically funny. She has an uncanny ability to draw you in and keep you wherever she wants you. In this case, it's in house of vampires. And I love it there.

Merit is my hero. She is strong, capable, and sardonic. She's a loyal friend and has a work ethic like none other. Resisting Ethan's charms and advances has become increasingly difficult for her, and I feel her frustration with both herself and with him. I get that she's conflicted - she wants him, but is afraid that if she allows herself to be with him, she will lose herself entirely - to him, to her job, to her vampire self. And Merit's number one goal is to maintain her humanity. I love that about her.

But, I gotta say, after all the sexual tension - the push and pull between these two - I'm SO ready for them to just get it over with! Ethan is so perfect and so perfect for Merit. They seriously need to get together already. The anticipation for the next book, though, is so sweet.  

Book #111 - Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires #1)

Have you ever started reading books in a certain genre, and you end up sticking with that genre for awhile? It's like you're on a paranormal romance kick or a high fantasy bender. Know what I mean? Well, it seems as if lately I've been on a bad ass chick high. Now, I know that "Bass Ass Chick" is not an official book genre. But, honestly, maybe it should be.

Merit is a rich graduate student who loves everything about her life (with the exception of her horrid parents) until she's nearly killed, and subsequently turned into a vampire by Ethan Sullivan, head vamp of Cadogan House. As she slowly comes to grips with the loss of her old life and embraces her new one, she also has to deal with an apparent threat to not only her master and her new House, but also her life.

Ok, yes. Officially, Some Girls Bite is classified as Urban Fantasy. I like Bad Ass Chick better. Because that is a better descriptor for this book. Merit ROCKS. She's super smart - she was a graduate student in literature, for goodness sake. She's resilient - she survived a horrible childhood with loveless parents and then survived a life-changing event that she didn't ask for with relative ease. She's brave - she handles her "master" like no one else and doesn't let him give her any crap.

Some Girls Bite was such a great book. All the characters had so much personality and life! And, better than that, it was so funny in so many places. I laughed out loud dozens of times. Merit's constant snark and hers and Ethan's dry banter absolutely cracked me up. Luke is a fantastic character, as is Catcher - I'd love to have them as my BFFs.

Overall, even though this book is about vampires, it was a breath of fresh air. I sincerely hope that all the books in this series are as good as this first one. I'm about to find out.
