Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. This is one meme I can get on board with - I LOVE lists! I'll show you mine if you show me yours!

So, this week is a "back-to-school freebie" week. Basically, we pick any category that has something to do with school. So, my list is...

Top 10 Favorite Books/Series Set in a School

1. Harry Potter Series, by J.K. Rowling/Hogwarts - This list would not be complete without the school to beat all schools - Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I love this series. My 10-year-old daughter loves this series. It will forever be one of the best series set in a school of all time.

2. Vampire Academy Series, by Richelle Mead/St. Vladimir's - Vampire Academy has got to be one of my most loved YA PNR ever. Dimitri is the hottest, most badass teacher ever. Pretty sure Rose agrees with me.

3. The Covenant Series, by Jennifer Armentrout/The Covenant - To this day, Aiden St. Delphi remains the book boyfriend at the top of my very long list. And Jennifer Armentrout's Covenant series (and now the Titans spin-off) remains the one series I've read more times than any other.

4. Misconduct, by Penelope Douglas/Braddock Autenberry - Shifting gears a bit, not only is Misconduct an adult contemporary romance book, but it's a standalone. Much to my disappointment - Easton and Tyler were so incredibly yummy together. And I loved Easton's teaching methods - I wish she had been my teacher.

5. The Rusk University Series, by Cora Carmack/Rusk University - I have so much love for this series that centers around a college football team. It marries some of my most favorite things - a sports theme, strong but awkward girls, and a sexy new adult vibe.

6. The Off-Campus Series, by Elle Kennedy/Briar University - In keeping with the sports-themed books, Elle Kennedy's Off-Campus series might be one of my favorites. Which is weird, because ice hockey is not a sport I care even a whit about. But these books - and the boys in them - are SO good.

7. The Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series, by Rick Riordan/Camp Half-Blood - So, this might be cheating just a smudge, as Camp Half-Blood isn't quite a school. But, it does offer instruction to demigods on how to do... well, demigod stuff. This middle-grade series is so incredibly entertaining

8. P.S. I Like You, by Kasie West/Some un-named high school in Arizona - I haven't thoroughly enjoyed a book more in recent months than P.S. I Like You. It was so sweet and adorable and engaging. It's the perfect example of a YA book that I think anyone of any age would love.

9. Slammed, my Colleen Hoover/a high school in Michigan - I don't even like poetry much, and Slammed pretty much owned me. It was my first CoHo book ever, so it was the first time (and definitely not the last time) she brought me to tears. So, it takes a special place in my heart.

10. The Bowler University Series, by Megan Erickson/Bowler University - Make it Count highlighted how sexy it can be to be a nerd. And it was the book to launch a dozen more favorites for me by this author.

BLOG TOUR TOP 10 & GIVEAWAY: The Thousandth Floor (The Thousandth Floor #1)

Katharine McGee's debut dystopian novel, THE THOUSANDTH FLOOR comes out tomorrow. Imagine New York City 100 years in the future. Most of the city lives in one building that is 2.5 miles high and has - you guessed it - 1,000 floors. The richer and more prominent you are, the higher up you live. It's a pretty amazing idea that an entire city could live in one building and have everything at its fingertips - houses, restaurants, gyms, schools. And what would it be like being a teenager living in a world like this? The Thousandth Floor follows the lives of five teens, all living different lives, yet finding a way to intersect in some way.

Today I have something special for you - we know what Katharine McGee's view of NYC 100 years from now is. What about her thoughts of it in 2016? I asked her what her top 10 favorite things about New York City in 2016 are. Here are her answers...

Katherine McGee's Top 10 Favorite Things About New York City in 2016

10. It’s still the city that never sleeps. No matter the day or time, something is always happening in New York. Life there is so convenient—restaurants and drugstores are always open, and everything delivers. Pouring rain outside? No need to leave home; just order Chinese food delivery and watch the rain from your window, snuggled up in a blanket!

9. Shakespeare in the Park. It’s a New York rite of passage! You have to sit in line all morning, starting at around 6 AM (earlier on the weekends!) just to get tickets when they go on sale at noon. But being in line is actually incredibly fun—everyone is laughing and talking, reading books, sharing snacks. By the time you finally get your ticket, you feel like you’ve earned it!

8. That first magical weekend of spring. You can always tell the day that the weather changes in New York because suddenly, everyone streams outdoors wearing sunglasses and scarves, pale from the, but determined to walk outside and get an iced coffee instead of hot!

7. The Frick museum. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Met, but the Frick is underrated. If you’ve been to their summer garden party and seen their fountains in action then you know what I mean! The house itself is a historic monument, with gorgeous staircases and light fixtures and furniture, and the art is breathtaking. Sometimes I go there alone to just sit in the room lined with Fragonard paintings.

6. Rooftops. Once the weather turns warm, New York goes totally nuts for rooftops—everyone wants to sit outside to share a glass of wine with friends and enjoy the sunset. There are so many fantastic rooftops (the Hotel Gansevoort, or the Empire Hotel, which always makes me think of Chuck Bass) but my favorite is still the roof of the Met Museum!

5. The transit system. It’s so easy to get around New York: no matter where you’re headed, a subway will take you there. After five years of living in New York, I basically had the subway map memorized—a bit of a useless skill now that I’ve moved away, but at least I get to go back occasionally.

4. The food. New York has every kind of food imaginable! One of my best friends and I used to do monthly dinners where we tried a new cuisine each week, everything from Moroccan couscous to Korean barbeque to Russian borscht and pastries. I loved all of it, but I have to say my favorite food in all of New York was the bread pudding at Jacob’s Pickles. They make it out of crumbled honey biscuits and smother it in vanilla ice cream and now I’m hungry just thinking about it.

3. The West Village. When I lived in New York, my apartment was in the West Village, and it’s still my absolute favorite neighborhood. I love the adorable winding cobblestone streets and random boutiques. The West Village is always full of surprises—like a gourmet popsicle stand, or a bar that’s long and skinny and only four feet wide (it opened in the alleyway between two buildings). I miss it!

2. Broadway. I inherited this love from my mom, who unlike me is a great singer, and always walks around our house humming show tunes. When I was growing up, we saw Broadway shows every time they toured through Houston, and as I got older, we started taking annual trips together to New York to see new shows as they opened. Favorite show of all time: Les Miz. Favorite new show: Hamilton, without a doubt.

1. The people. New Yorkers are unlike anyone else on the planet. Of course I’m an adopted New Yorker, not a native, but I’m just as fiercely proud as any of them ☺ It constantly amazes me how New York attracts such a brilliant, eclectic, ambitious, and diverse group of people. New Yorkers sometimes act gruff and impatient with one another, but the truth is, they will always help one another. I saw it firsthand during Hurricane Sandy and this year in winter storm Jonas—there’s no one like New Yorkers for banding together in a crisis.

REVIEW: Sutphin Boulevard (Five Boroughs #1)

Sutphin Boulevard (Five Boroughs #1), by Santino Hassell
Publish Date:
July 31, 2005
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Format: e-book, purchased
Genre: adult contemporary m/m romance
To Buy: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Rating: 5 STARS

(Synopsis) Michael Rodriguez and Nunzio Medici have been friends for two decades. From escaping their dysfunctional families in the working-class neighborhood of South Jamaica, Queens to teaching in one of the city’s most queer friendly schools in Brooklyn, the two men have shared everything. Or so they thought until a sweltering night of dancing leads to an unexpected encounter that forever changes their friendship.

Now, casual touches and lingering looks are packed with sexual tension, and Michael can’t forget the feel of his best friend’s hands on him. Once problems rear up at work and home, Michael finds himself seeking constant escape in the effortless intimacy and mind-blowing sex he has with Nunzio. But things don’t stay easy for long.

When Michael’s world begins to crumble in a sea of tragedy and complications, he knows he has to make a choice: find solace in a path of self-destruction or accept the love of the man who has been by his side for twenty years.

Are you kidding me with this awesome book? I didn't know what to expect when I purchased Sutphin Boulevard. All I knew was that Santino Hassell has paired with one of my favorite authors, Megan Erickson, on the Cyberlove series. Which I love. So, I wanted to know more about Santino as a solitary writer. And, I am telling you, this book blew me away.

Sutphin Boulevard is an incredibly powerful friends to lovers story. But, it's also a lot more than that. It's about friendship and family and grief and how we all deal with the bad things that happen in our lives. Some deal with it well - others, not so well. But, what spoke to me was the importance of unconditional love. And that, even when we don't want it or feel like we deserve it, just the knowledge that there is someone or several someones out there who will love us anyway can make all the difference in the world.

Michael and Nunzio have been BFFs forever, but one drunken night at a club changes the way Michael looks at Nunzio. Michael is having a hard time dealing with his shifting feelings for his friend, and an even harder time dealing with his alcoholic father and deadbeat, but lovable, brother at home. All those things, together with changes at his job, have Michael constantly on edge and stressed out. No one seems to be able to reach him, and a chain reaction of bad choices finally forces Michael to take stock of his life and figure out how to deal with his problems - and whether he wants to do it by himself or with Nunzio by his side as more than a friend.

I am about as far removed from this world as you can get. I'm a woman. I'm white. I'm heterosexual. I live in the 'burbs with a cornfield in my backyard. And yet, Santino Hassell's brilliant writing forced me to be a part of the story. His writing is beautiful and evocative and it makes his characters, surroundings and situations become so real. In Michael's case, that meant a lot of tears and throat lumps on my part.

Make no mistake - this is a crazy sexy book. Michael and Nunzio have off-the-charts chemistry, and when they put that to good use... oh my. So, while I promise you will swoon and you will blush, you will also FEEL. Your feels will have feels. Michael's journey to his happy place with Nunzio is hard. It's frustrating and sad and scary. The emotional response that Michael's life ripped from me was unparalleled.

I ended up binge reading this entire series. After I was introduced to the characters that I knew would take starring roles in the future books in the series, I had to know their stories too. And, Santino Hassell didn't disappoint. Not even a little.

BOG TOUR REVIEW: Bad Judgment

Steamy, sexy, lawyerly goodness - BAD JUDGMENT by Meghan March was all those things and more. Check out my review, then go read it for yourself!

Bad Judgment, by Meghan March
Publish Date:
August 22, 2016
Publisher: self-published
Format: e-ARC, provided by the author and Inkslinger PR
Genre: adult contemporary romance

Rating: 4.5 STARS

(Synopsis) He’s so arrogant.

She’s so self-righteous.

I can’t stand him.

I want her.

He’s a distraction I don’t need.

She’ll say yes eventually because I’m not giving up.

Justine Porter is stuck between a rock and a stripper pole. She lost her law school scholarship, which means she has two choices to keep her life on track: strip for her tuition or tutor the most distractingly sexy guy in her class—the one she’s been turning down for two years straight. It should be an easy choice, but tutoring Ryker Grant could derail her plans to graduate with honors faster than two-for-one night at the Déjà Vu. Then again, topless has never really been her color.

She could take the easy road, just this once . . . but the deal has enough loopholes to trip anyone up.

Who knew they taught bad judgment in law school?

The year 2016 marks the time when I became a Meghan March fangirl. Bad Judgment is my 11th book by her this year and the first standalone. Although, I'm kinda wishing it was part of a series. Because I don't think I got nearly enough of Ryker Grant.

Justine is a hard-core law student. She has to be in order to keep her full-ride scholarship because without it, she can't go to school. She can't afford to be distracted by men, even if one man in particular is the hottest thing on two legs. It's why she's turned him down every time he's asked her out. For two whole years. But, Ryker's dry spell is finally over. Because Justine's scholarship has been yanked, and tutoring Ryker is the only way she can make enough to stay in school and graduate.

Justine is the kind of female character that really does it for me. She's confident and driven and smart and able to say no to a hot guy that's a sure thing. She's motivated by the right things - she wants to make herself better and help people in the process. And, let's face it. She's totally right about Ryker. If she had allowed herself to get involved with him, he WOULD have been a huge distraction.

She also knows to accept help when it's offered, even if it puts her in regular close contact with the guy who is starting to consume her thoughts. And, when things get too complicated and she feels her morals slipping away, she knows when to change the game to make things right again. It's that last one that really impressed me - it's not something you see often in books, so it was so awesome to see it here.

Ryker is a guy in more than one tough spot. He's feeling pressure from his dad, he doesn't know what to do with the rest of his life, and the girl he can't stop thinking about won't give him a shot. Ryker was beyond charming. He was so adorable and endearing, and I promise you will be cheering for him from the very first time you meet him.

Meghan March's typical steamy heat is definitely present in Bad Judgment. When Justine and Ryker take their anger and frustration out on one another, it manifests into some crazy hot encounters. But, it was never hate screwing - no, the reader could tell that, at least for Ryker, he's interested in way more than a one-night stand, and he uses all his talents to woo Justine. And, he's a good wooer.

Bad Judgment went too fast for me. Could be because I couldn't put it down once I stopped. It was funny at times, definitely sexy and incredibly fulfilling once I reached the end. I loved every minute.

Meghan March has been known to wear camo face paint and tromp around in woods wearing mud-covered boots, all while sporting a perfect manicure. She's also impulsive, easily entertained, and absolutely unapologetic about the fact that she loves to read and write smut. Her past lives include slinging auto parts, selling lingerie, making custom jewelry, and practicing corporate law. Writing books about dirty talking alpha males and the strong, sassy women who bring them to their knees is by far the most fabulous job she's ever had. She loves hearing from her readers at meghanmarchbooks@gmail.com.

(Synopsis) From the New York Times Bestselling author of MISTER O and BIG ROCK, comes a hot & hilarious new standalone romantic comedy…

I’ve been told I have quite a gift.

Hey, I don’t just mean in my pants. I’ve got a big brain too, and a huge heart of gold. And I like to use all my gifts to the fullest, the package included. Life is smooth sailing....

Until I find myself stuck between a rock and a sexy roommate, which makes for one very hard…place.

Because scoring an apartment in this city is harder than finding true love. So even if I have to shack up with my buddy’s smoking hot and incredibly amazing little sister, a man’s got to do what a man’s got to do.

I can resist Josie. I’m disciplined, I’m focused, and I keep my hands to myself, even in the mere five-hundred square feet we share. Until the one night she insists on sliding under the covers with me. It’ll help her sleep after what happened that day, she says.

Surprise—neither one of us sleeps.

And even though we agree to return to roomies-without-benefits, I quickly realize I want more than someone to split the utilities with. Now all I want is to spend every night—and every day—with my gorgeous roommate.

Did I mention she’s also one of my best friends? That she’s brilliant, beautiful and a total firecracker?

Guess that makes her the full package too.

What’s a man stuck in a hard place to do?

I’m at your service. Come and ride on my Joy Stick…

That's what I like to say to the ladies. Or I would if I were total pig. It's far too easy in this world to strut around like a peacock when you’ve got all these other features in your favor. But just like the custom cars I build with class and sophistication, that’s how I treat my women.

Don’t worry. I absolutely do my best work dirty…both in the shop, and between the sheets. Work and play — that’s what my life has been, and I f&*king love it. I’m completely, 100% driven. Until one woman comes along and throws a wrench in my plans. The one woman I should absolutely, positively never take for a joy ride.

Now that's all I want to do with her…she’s so far off-limits, but that’s exactly where I want to go with her.

Get ready for a wild ride…

(Synopsis) Keep your lover close and your enemy closer…

After giving in to a fiery night of passion, island adventurer Steph Anderson and bounty hunter Jake Harlowe are back to square one. With millions in stolen jewels at stake, it’s hard for Steph not to question her new partner’s true motives—no matter how sexy he might be. Jake is hungry for more of Steph, but he can sense her growing mistrust, which only fuels his own doubts. Worse, there’s undeniable evidence that someone else is now after the jewels—and that they are both in real danger.

Fighting against their magnetic attraction is a distraction these two can’t afford. In order to survive, they’ll have to pull off one more heist—and trust each other with something even more precious than jewels: their hearts.

When we last saw Steph, she was having a crisis of faith in her new partner and lover. Just when she had decided to open up her battered heart to Jake, it appears that he has used that gift to his advantage. And that really hurts her.

But, there's no denying he's good at his job. And, Steph really needs to know once and for all if her step-father is a bad guy or not. So, she decides to stick with him and use his skills like he used her, and when the case of the missing sapphires is solved, she can get rid of him. If wishes were fishes...

Despite the relationship questions, Steph and Jake still make a great team, which I loved. Just because Steph is convinced that Jake is playing her doesn't remove the sexual tension and heat between them. It's still there, which goes so well with the suspense and intrigue surrounding the stolen sapphires. It's tension-filled on all sides, which only meant that there was no way I could put it down until I was done.

The setting of the Cayman Islands, together with Steph's profession as a eco-tour guide and dive instructor is so cool. It made me want to go there. And it made me want to kiss sting rays.

As Steph and Jake work together to figure out who stole the jewels and where they put them, they learn more about each other. Jake learned about Steph's mom and her lack of funds at home, thus fueling Steph's desire to talk her step-dad into helping or copping to stealing. Steph learned about Jake's dedication to his family, which is why he does his job so well.

Sapphire Heist was so much fun. It was a suspenseful and mysterious and super sexy. The ending was fantastic, too. I can't wait for Lauren Blakely to take another turn at romantic suspense!

This woman drove him wild. She was a pistol, a fiery, sexy, determined, tenacious woman who made him crazy, and who he wanted fiercely at the same damn time. “Do you want to try that whole thing again? Like you were doing in your room. Take off my shirt, and strip off my shorts, and pull off my boxers?”
Her lips quirked up. “I didn’t get to the boxers.”

“I know,” he said, raising an eyebrow. “Damn shame. Because I like it when you touch me. I like it when you take my clothes off and run your hands all over me. Do you like it when I do that to you?”

She nodded. “So much. So incredibly much,” she said, her voice breathy.

He backed her up against the railing, pressing his pelvis to her and caging her in with his arms. “Are you sure?”

He ground his hips against her, letting her feel the full length of his arousal.

Her breath came fast. “So sure,” she said, wrapping her arms around his lower back and tugging him close. “I want to finish what we were starting in the room.”

He laughed loudly and deeply. “Oh Steph. We barely got started. We hardly got started at all.”

She grabbed his shirt. “Can we please just fuck it out now?”

He cracked up at her question, at the sexy desperation in her voice. “Fuck it out?”

She nodded. “Yes. Your anger. Our mistrust. My doubt. Can we just once and for all fuck it out and let it go?”

He clasped her cheeks in his hands. “I can’t think of a damn thing I’d rather do now than fuck it out. Besides, it’s impossible for me to think straight and properly plan the next phase of Project Diamond unless you put your hands on the railing, bend over, and raise your skirt for me.”

Her eyes lit up, sparkling with a naughty kind of excitement. “Then please allow me to help you think straight.”

He laced a hand through her hair, yanked her close, and planted a hot, searing kiss on her delicious lips. She melted under his touch, and he loved it. Loved the way she responded.

As he kissed her, he lowered a hand to her leg and inched his fingers up the warm skin of her thighs, quickly finding what he wanted—the wet scrap of fabric between her legs. She was so damn turned on, just like he was. He groaned as he kissed her, his bones vibrating with lust as he ran his fingers against the evidence of her desire. He tugged off her underwear, broke the kiss, and spun her around.

Covering her back with his chest, he wrapped her hair in his hand and tugged gently. She gasped and arched her ass higher. Yup. That was his answer. She liked a little rough play. He brought his mouth to her ear. “Do you like it hard? Do you like it rough? Do you like it angry?”

She turned her head to look at him. “With you, so far I like everything.”

These Discovery Bundles from 1001 Dark Nights are very aptly named. Every time I read one, I discover a new-to-me author that I now can't wait to read more of.

I chose to read Bundle Six mostly because of the two novellas by Jennifer Armentrout and Lorelei James. I'm now all caught up on Jen Armentrout's Wait For You series, and although I've only read the first book in Lorelei James' Blacktop Cowboys series, I am familiar with all of her other series.

All the other authors were new to me, and I read some things I really loved. My personal favorite was Donna Grant's Dragon King. I love the premise of immortal dragon shape shifters who mate for life. I've added the first book in her Dark Kings series to my TBR already, and am looking forward to seeing how it all started.

It's strange for me to love these bundles so much. Normally, I'm very much a stickler for reading series in order. But there's something fun about getting this tiny taste of a world. I know I won't know the characters or the other relationships that have obviously been formed in previous books. But, I'm okay with that. I get a glimpse of the world and the background info, which tells me a lot about the series as a whole and whether I will like it.

And, as a bonus, I get a steamy romance condensed into 100 pages or less. Six times over.

Bundle Six gives you a little bit of everything. You'll get a new adult contemporary romance, some adult contemporaries, a suspense story and a few paranormal romances. So, no matter your preferences, as long as you like your kissing books, you'll find something good to read here.

About Lorelei James:
Lorelei James is the New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author of contemporary erotic western romances set in the modern day Wild West and also contemporary erotic romances. Lorelei’s books have been nominated for and won the Romantic Times Reviewer’s choice Award, as well as the CAPA Award. Lorelei lives in western South Dakota with her family…and a whole closet full of cow girl boots.

From Lorelei: “Why do I have a particular fondness for all things western? Well, I’m a fourth generation South Dakotan, living in the Black Hills, which is chock-full of interesting characters, including cowboys, Indians, ranchers, and bikers. The geographical diversity of the surrounding area showcases mountains, plains, and badlands. Living in and writing about rural settings gives me a unique perspective, especially since I’m not writing historical westerns. Through my fictional world, I can show the ideals and the cowboy way of life are still very much alive.”

About Alexandra Ivy:
Alexandra Ivy is a New York Times and USA Todaybestselling author. From Alexandra: “I’m not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother’s knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library.

Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on.

Years later (no, I’m not admitting how many) I’m still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!

I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.

About Laura Wright:
Laura Wright is a New York Times and USA Todaybestselling author. From Laura: “Unlike many of my peers in the writing world, I wasn’t a writer or a reader until I left high school. During my youth I was into theater, song and dance, commercials and boys. I loved romance surely, but I had never read a romance novel until my late teens. With that said, I remember the day I did like it was a moment ago – my aunt gave me the Jude Deveraux novel, Knight in Shining Armor and I couldn’t put it down until the very last word. Then I went straight to the library and got another – then another until I’d read everything she’d ever written. After that, it was McNaught, Howard, Schone, Kleypas, and the Silhouette line, Desire. I instantly loved those emotional, sexy reads, so much so that I began to carve out ideas for my own stories, themes that were unique to me and moved me. In 1997 I enrolled in UCLA extension writing classes, met my mentor and critique partners and since have never stopped writing. I was committed then and I still am now; the need to tell my own romantic stories a full on obsession. My first manuscript was rejected, and though the second one was as well the editor who’d rejected it wanted to see something else from me. I had something (note to authors; always keep working, even after you’ve sent in a proposal) and sent it right away. The day I got the call telling me Desire wanted to buy Cinderella and the Playboy was the best day of my life. That is until I married my husband, and had my two beautiful children. But I must say, writing is much like motherhood – tough, grueling, surprising, delicious and for me, a dream come true.”

About Kennedy Layne:
“First and foremost, I love life. I love that I’m a wife, mother, daughter, sister…and a writer.

“I am one of the lucky women in this world who gets to do what makes them happy. As long as I have a cup of coffee (maybe two or three) and my laptop, the stories evolve themselves and I try to do them justice. I draw my inspiration from a retired Marine Master Sergeant that swept me off of my feet and has drawn me into a world that fulfills all of my deepest and darkest desires. Smoldering romance, military men, intrigue, with a little bit of kinky chili pepper (his recipe), fill my head and there is nothing more satisfying than making the hero and heroine fulfill their destinies.

“Thank you for having joined me on their journeys…”

RELEASE WEEK REVIEW + AUTHOR INTERVIEW: His Royal Favorite (His Royal Secret #2)

His Royal Favorite (His Royal Secret #2), by Lilah Pace
Publish Date:
August 16, 2016
Publisher: Intermix
Format: e-ARC, provided by the publisher
Genre: adult contemporary m/m romance
To Buy: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Rating: 4.5 STARS

(Synopsis) James, Prince of Wales, is making history. He's decided to come out to his subjects—and the world. However, telling the truth means exposing his relationship with lone-wolf reporter Benjamin Dahan. Although Ben never wanted commitment, the unexpected depth of his feelings leads him to join James in the media's harsh spotlight.

When the news story explodes across the globe, Ben can endure the mockery and dirty jokes. But after his tragic past is cruelly revealed, his life begins to implode. Can even his love for James be worth this?

James has it no easier. His revelation divides the country and sparks turmoil within the royal family. He must struggle to defend not only himself and Ben, but also his younger sister, who hovers on the brink of a breakdown that could endanger her life.

Is Ben strong enough to survive the onslaught and stand by James' side? And will James have to make a choice between Ben and the crown?

This was a fantastic ending to an incredibly intriguing series. Ben and James' relationship takes a decidedly angsty and tumultuous turn at the moment when you would think it should get easier for them. And once again, Lilah Pace's intimate knowledge of all the inner workings of the royal family and all the protocol blew me away. It either means she's either really, REALLY good at researching or... she's a princess. That question is answered after my review in an interview I was lucky enough to score with her (*fist pump*). So, keep reading!

James has decided to come out of the royal closet and Ben has decided to do it by his side. They are both going into this knowing that the revelation is going to cause waves on both sides. James is aware that there are parts of his royal life - like the affiliation with the church - that will have major problems with his being gay. He may even be prevented from being King, a position for which he's been groomed all his life. And, Ben knows that this will take away his quiet, private life forever. Even if he and James don't stay together, the press will dog him for a very long time. And that's just not his thing.

But, both James and Ben think that their love can conquer all of that. Admittedly, they were a bit naive and idealistic.

From the very beginning, nothing goes as planned. Although, for James, things are more positive than he had hoped for. He's still able to do his job, and despite the church still potentially interfering in his succession to the throne, the support for his sexuality is remarkable.

However, for Ben, this is his first taste at wealth and living a life in the public eye. While James has lived with this since birth, Ben isn't used to having to answer to others, or not be able to go out to eat at a restaurant, or get harassed by the paps when he simply tries to go to work. He now has to dress a certain way, say certain things, associate with certain people, and it heaps stress upon an already volatile situation.

Ben knows he loves James. Adores him, even. But, he starts to question whether even the love of his life is worth all the sacrifices that come with it. And Ben isn't delusional - he knows that James is as good as it's going to get. He's his soul mate. And, if he walks, he will never love anyone like that again.

Did I mention the angst? His Royal Favorite broke my heart again and again. James is suffering because Ben is suffering and he doesn't know how to fix it. He feels guilty and desperate and it all comes out on the pages. I wanted to hug both of them - I know I cried for both of them. It all just seemed so hopeless unless Ben could find some glimmer of positivity in his new living situation.

The side characters in this book are wonderful. I loved James' PR woman - she is a shark and a sweetheart all in one package. Ben's only friend from his life before James is also pretty wonderful. And, we can't forget about James' sister Indigo. Her story definitely is an important one and is told with dignity and respect.

James and Ben are an established couple by now (although, they still discover new things about each other - some good, some disheartening), and are going through some serious emotional stuff. As a result, sex is relegated to the back burner. There isn't quite as much sexy times between the two men, but their feelings for one another are played out in other ways - with tenderness and thoughtful gestures and passionate words.

This was an awesome conclusion to an intriguing and passionate story.

Lilah Pace is the author of the sexy and emotional m/m adult contemporary romance duology His Royal Secret and His Royal Favorite. I’m so excited to welcome her to Krista’s Dust Jacket to talk to us about this series! I’ve had some burning questions about it, and now I get to have them answered - so of course I’m going to share them with you!

Lilah, thanks so much for taking time out of your busy day to satisfy my curiosity!

Thanks so much! This story's dear to me, so I'm always ready to talk about it. Maybe too much!

In both HIS ROYAL SECRET and HIS ROYAL FAVORITE, we see two very different worlds - Ben’s global media world and James’ royal one. You write both sides as if you’re intimately familiar with them. Do you have a background in journalism that gave you insight into Ben’s life?

…kind of? I've worked as a journalist, but my career was very, very unlike Ben's. However, some of my former coworkers have gone on to do very similar things, so I drew on some of their experiences and advice.

Since I know you’re not a princess when you’re not writing (or are you? *raises eyebrow*), how did you manage to paint James’ world of royal structure and protocol so vividly? What sort of research did you conduct to make it so believable?

Sadly, no, not a princess. But I've been an avid royal-watcher for a long while, probably because Princess Diana's wedding hit when I was at a very impressionable age. It's been a subject I've read a lot about, that and the English tradition of being in service, which intersects with royalty a bit. My friends back in Great Britain did some Britspeak reads for me, too, and shared what they knew about the royals as well. Some liberties are still taken, and I'm sure there are huge blunders I can't even guess at—but at least a little genuine detail got in.

What was your inspiration for Ben’s and James’ story?

Really it came from being overly interested in the royals, right at the point in time when the country was beginning to seriously discuss legalizing gay marriage. I began wondering what would happen if you had a gay heir to the throne, what the legal issues would be, how it would affect the Church of England, et cetera. One day I was driving along thinking about this when I caught myself and felt silly—I went, Why are you obsessing about this? How can this ever matter in your life? And immediately I knew the answer: I had to write about it.

This duology is very different from your Asking For It series, and not just because the romance in this series is m/m and Asking For It is m/f. Do you have a preference for which type you like to write more?

Between m/f and m/m—probably m/f is my preference, but it's not a very strong one. I find both kinds of romance very compelling emotionally and very hot. (My being exclusively attracted to men means that f/f doesn't really register as sexy to me in the same way, which makes me unlikely to write it, but the emotion in f/f story arcs can still work for me as a reader.) I just want to dig into what draws two people to each other and makes it completely, utterly necessary that they be together from that day on.

Did you find it difficult to get inside the heads of two men?

It didn't seem difficult to me, though I guess male readers would have to be the last word on that one! Really, emotionally, when it comes to falling in love, I don't think men and women (and the genderfluid) are so hugely different and separate. Those feelings are ones we can all connect with to some degree.

So, what is coming next?

My editor's about to get proposals for both some m/f and m/m ideas. We'll see what she says!

And, because I like to ask one fun question, out of all the places you’ve lived, which was your favorite and why?

New York City. I'm not sure I'd ever move back—I'm at a different place in my life now—but I loved the whirl of it, the incredible diversity of people I'd meet, the incredible art and culture, and the sheer energy. The city can be rough, but it made me get my act together. I'll always miss it a little.

Lilah Pace is a pseudonym for a New York Times bestselling author, so she can’t give away too much about herself here, but she has lived everywhere from Italy to the United Kingdom before putting down roots in the American South.

She’s addicted to Diet Coke, loves her dog, and daydreams about several British movie stars (though usually no more than two at a time).

And while it took her a long while to get up the courage to write books, now she hopes she’ll never stop.

RELEASE WEEK REVIEW: Sugar Rush (Sugar Bowl #2)

Holy crap - that ending. THIS SERIES! If you haven't started the Sugar Bowl series by Sawyer Bennett, you need to get on that ASAP. Because it's blowing my mind with its awesomeness.

Sugar Rush (Sugar Bowl #2), by Sawyer Bennett
Publish Date:
August 16, 2016
Publisher: Loveswept
Format: e-ARC, provided by the author
Genre: adult contemporary romance
To Buy: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Rating: 5 STARS

(Synopsis) After posing as an escort for the Sugar Bowl online dating service, Sela Halstead is looking for one thing: payback. She's closing in on the site's heartless founder, Jonathon Townsend, and she needs Beckett North, Townsend's business partner and her lover, by her side. She'd thought that their intimate nights together had forged an unbreakable bond, but after a shocking betrayal, Sela begins to doubt the brilliant bad boy. When push comes to shove, can she trust Beck to do the right thing?

Now that he understands the truth, Beck will stop at nothing to secure the reckoning Sela deserves. But between his desire for her and his disgust for JT, Beck doesn't exactly have a lot of control over his emotional state. Left with no other choice, he must summon all his discipline to maintain JT's trust and pretend that they're still friends. But how far will Beck go to prove his loyalty to Sela? He nearly lost her once. To keep her, Beck might have to kill for her.

Sugar Rush picks up moments after Sugar Daddy left off. Which is a very good thing, because the cliffhanger at the end of Sugar Daddy left me reeling. Thank you, Sawyer Bennett, for not making me wait too long to find out what happened next for Sela and Beck.

So, Sela finally came clean to Beckett about what happened to her at the hands of his business partner JT, and now Beckett is in a difficult position. He needs to find a way to cut his ties with JT, keep his business and protect his girl, all while playing like everything is cool at work. This is no small feat, especially since JT is Beck's best friend and has been for a long time.

Meanwhile, Sela has to learn to rely on Beck to help her. It's become obvious to her that her original plan to infiltrate the Sugar Bowl, murder JT, and either die herself or go to jail for the rest of her life, isn't really a viable one anymore. She now has something to live for - a reason to look forward to the future.

Trust is a hard thing for Sela though, as we saw in book 1. She doesn't give it or her hard-won control up easily. But if anyone can convince her to, it's Beck. I LOVE this guy. He's one of the good ones. His company may be a bit on the sketchy side, but he's inherently a good guy. He helps others, loves fiercely and will go to great lengths to protect people he loves. Which is made very obvious in Sugar Rush.

Once again, Sawyer Bennett hits us with one awesome cliffhanger. It made me wish I had the last book on hand right away, because one bad decision, one huge information bomb and one crazy final scene all in the last chapter had me ripping my hair out, wishing I could just keep reading. I can't wait to read more hot Sela and Beck scenes, find out what's happening with their plans to oust JT and live happily ever after.

Since the release of her debut contemporary romance novel, Off Sides, in January 2013, Sawyer Bennett has released more than 30 books and has been featured on both the USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists on multiple occasions.

A reformed trial lawyer from North Carolina, Sawyer uses real life experience to create relatable, sexy stories that appeal to a wide array of readers. From new adult to erotic contemporary romance, Sawyer writes something for just about everyone.

Sawyer likes her Bloody Mary’s strong, her martinis dirty, and her heroes a combination of the two. When not bringing fictional romance to life, Sawyer is a chauffeur, stylist, chef, maid, and personal assistant to a very active toddler, as well as full-time servant to two adorably naughty dogs. She believes in the good of others, and that a bad day can be cured with a great work-out, cake, or a combination of the two.
