BLOG TOUR REVIEW & EXCERPT: Falling Under You (Fixed #4.5)

I was so excited to finally get Norma and Boyd's story in this fantastically sexy 1001 Dark Nights novella, FALLING UNDER YOU. Check out my review and an excerpt!

Falling Under You (Fixed #4.5), by Laurelin Paige

Publisher: Evil Eye Concepts, Inc.
Format: e-ARC, provided by Inkslinger PR
Genre: young adult fantasy
To Buy: Amazon

Rating: 4.5 STARS

(Synopsis) Norma Anders has always prided herself on her intelligence and determination. She climbed out of poverty, put herself through school and is now a chief financial advisor at Pierce Industries. She’s certainly a woman who won’t be topped. Not in business anyway.

But she’s pretty sure she’d like to be topped in the bedroom.

Unfortunately most men see independence and ambition in a woman and they run. Even her dominant boss, Hudson Pierce has turned down her advances, leaving her to fear that she will never find the lover she’s longing for.

Then the most unlikely candidate steps up. Boyd, her much-too-young and oh-so-hot assistant surprises her one night with bold suggestions and an authoritative demeanor he’s never shown her in the office.

It’s a bad idea…such a deliciously bad idea…but when Boyd takes the reins and leads her to sensual bliss she’s never known, the headstrong Norma can’t help but fall under his command.

If you're at all familiar with Laurelin Paige's Fixed series, you should be familiar with Norma Anders. If you've also read Laurelin's Found duet (which is a spin-off of the Fixed series), I don't think there's any way you couldn't be curious about the alpha female, type A CFO of Pierce Industries. And her somewhat untraditional relationship with her assistant Boyd.

The best thing about Falling Under You was that we got to see what is underneath the Norma that we've seen up until now. And believe me - there's SO MUCH we haven't seen. Like, WHOA.

Norma feels responsible for everyone and everything. She has a high pressure important job working for Hudson. She's the oldest of three, and with their parents not in the picture, Norma feels like she needs to take care of her younger sister and brother. She has no time to turn off her brain and certainly no time to find a man who an help her with that.

As it turns out, there's been one under her nose for years.

Boyd - my goodness I love that man. He's so much younger than Norma, but so much older than her at the same time. He seems to know exactly what she needs, when she needs it, and he's willing to give it to her. And, holy smokes, does he ever give it to her good. But, Boyd has very strict rules, which is exactly what Norma needs from him.

Their relationship isn't easy, though, given the "no romantic relationships at work" rule at place at Pierce Industries. The secrecy starts to wear on both of them, and Norma is faced with a choice - her job or her boyfriend.

I loved delving into the Fixed world one more time to get the scoop on Norma and Boyd. Their story was surprisingly emotional and not surprisingly hot as hell. And their story was like the last piece in the Fixed puzzle.

I groaned and threw the covers off of me, heading for the shower. Usually I ran first, and I still planned to, but I needed something to cool the fire in my veins. Hopefully standing under an ice cold stream of water would do the trick.

It didn’t.

I tried running next, opting for ten miles instead of my normal six, thinking maybe I could sweat out the lust like it was a cold. Or was that a fever? Whatever, I came back tired, achy and soaked in perspiration, and the buzz between my legs was stronger than ever.

I was distracted by it through the rest of the morning. Gwen and I caught up on America’s Got Talent before she planned to go to bed for the day—her job at a nightclub kept her on a strange schedule. Afterward, I couldn’t remember a single thing I’d watched, but I could recall with clarity every moment I’d spent with Boyd the night before. That wasn’t a subject I planned on discussing with Gwen, though. So most of my responses to her were nods and grunts. Then she’d gone to sleep, thankfully, except after that I was left alone with the agony of my desire.

The rest of the night was more of the same, and Sunday as well. By Monday morning, I’d run over twenty miles, cleaned my entire house, taken five showers, and not thought about Boyd Barrett about a thousand times. Maybe even two thousand times. And now I had to go to work and face him.

Help me God.

I decided to go in early. That way I could sneak into my office without having to pass him on the way in. It wasn’t until I was in the elevator on my way to my floor that I remembered I also didn’t want to see Hudson. Several years with a clean, respectable work record, and in one evening I’d shattered my reputation with not one, but two, colleagues. The two colleagues who were the most important to me, no less.

Jesus, maybe I did need to quit.

It wasn’t yet seven, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Hudson were already working. Often, he slept in the loft above his office, which made an early appearance more probable than one from Boyd. Anxiety rose in my chest, an odd feeling for me since I was usually composed and calm. As soon as the doors opened, I ducked my head and scurried down the hallway, letting out a sigh of relief when I made it past Hudson’s office without seeing him.

And then gasping sharply when I ran into him, instead, outside my own office.

“Norma, I was hoping you’d be here early. I wondered if I could have a few minutes of your time.”

(Synopsis) I dominate the boardroom. I’m a Pierce—it’s what we do. But I never had a reason to bring that persona into the bedroom.

Until Genevive Fasbender.

She’s brash and bold and stubborn as hell, and she doesn’t believe it’s possible to satisfy her. But I’ve discovered her secret, one she hasn’t even figured out herself—she wants what I want.

And not only does she want it—I'll make her need it.

No matter what.

(From Goodreads) "I can easily divide my life into two parts—before her and after."

Hudson Pierce has led a life few others could even imagine. With money and power at his fingertips, he's wanted for almost nothing. He's never experienced love, however, and he's seen few examples of it in his dysfunctional family. The ridiculous notion of romance has always intrigued him. He's studied it, controlled it, manipulated it, and has yet to understand it.

Until he meets Alayna Withers.

Now, the games he's played in his quest for comprehension can finally come to an end. Or are they just beginning?

Told from his point of view, Hudson fills the holes in his love story with Alayna Withers. His past and relationship with his long-time friend Celia is further revealed and light is shed on his actions during his courtship with Alayna.

I freaking love companion books. Particularly from the guy's POV. I ate up Walking Disaster. Trust In Me. Unbreakable. When I learned about Hudson, I knew I had to have it. I loved the first three Fixed books, but there was a lot that I felt like I missed out on. Hudson was very much an enigma. So, the chance to get inside his head was a definite draw for me. And, I wasn't disappointed.

The really awesome thing about Hudson was that it wasn't simply a retelling of the first three Fixed books from his POV. Hudson always claimed that he didn't have the ability to love someone. It seemed as if that was drilled into his head by his evil mother. And then there was his destructive relationship with Celia. Hudson switches from pre-Alayna to post-Alayna, and when you put the two halves together, we get a whole picture of who Hudson really is.

Despite his destructive "games," when the reader gets Hudson's full backstory, it's hard to not feel a lot of empathy for him. It's clear that his parents were not nurturing and loving toward him. His mother tried to convince him that he was emotionless and loveless in an attempt to make herself feel better about her constant downward spiral. Although my opinion of Hudson had already risen by the end of Forever With You, by the end of Hudson, I was convinced the man could do no wrong.

Celia, however, I didn't really think I could hate more. I was wrong. Hudson can claim all he wants that he made her who she became. It became clear when we see their history that there was always a kernel of wrongness about her that only became amplified after her failed relationship attempt with Hudson. Hudson merely encouraged what was already there. And seeing how she hatched plan after plan to drive other people - Alayna included - to the brink of despair was pretty infuriating.

On the other side of the story, though, I loved watching Hudson's and Alayna's relationship unfold through his eyes. There was a lot that was very surprising to me. When the story was told from Alayna's POV, I got the impression that Hudson was dragged along kicking and screaming for awhile before finally succumbing to the realization that he was in love with her.

What is actually the case is a bit of instalove - crazy, right? It seems almost as if Hudson fell in love with Alayna from the moment he saw her. He seemed in it for the long haul. And, even more surprising, he admitted to himself that he loved Alayna long before he ever clued her in. It was shocking and delightful. It appeared that he only kept that nugget to himself so that he could more effectively manage Celia. Which, of course, ended up a big, fat fail.

The epilogue was absolutely wonderful. It gave me the perfect sense of closure to this couple's story. Thank you, Laurelin Paige for giving we fans something I know I was clamoring for. This peek inside the complex and beautiful mind of Hudson Pierce was the absolute best way to finish his and Alayna's story.

My Review for Fixed On You (Fixed #1)

Rating:  4 STARS

(From Goodreads) Alayna Withers has only had one kind of relationship: the kind that makes her obsessive and stalker-crazy. Now that Hudson Pierce has let her into his heart, she’s determined to break down the remaining walls between them so they can build a foundation that’s based on more than just amazing sex. Except Hudson’s not the only one with secrets.

With their pasts pulling them into a web of unfounded mistrust, Alayna turns to the one person who knows Hudson the best—Celia, the woman he almost married. Hoping for insight from someone who understands all sides of the story, Alayna forms a bond with Celia that goes too far—revealing things about Hudson that could end their love for good.

This is the first relationship where Alayna hasn’t spiraled out of control. And she might lose Hudson anyway…

WOW, was Found In You a frustrating book. As in, I really like these two and want them to be together and get their crap straight but they are making STOO-PID decisions and are making me completely nuts. As fellow book fiends, I'm sure you're as familiar with this feeling as I am. So, you also know that, frustrating doesn't mean bad - on the contrary. Found In You was engaging and captivating and swoony and crazy (pun intended - read the book. You'll get it.).

So, Lannie and Hunter seem to be in a good place, but what kind of a book would this be if things stayed that way? They make promises to each other that they find hard to keep. Both their pasts come back to haunt them. And trust seems to be a four-letter word. Despite all that, these two seem to have something special, and thankfully, neither one of them are likely to get it go without a fight.

So, why was I so frustrated? Most of it had to do with Alayna's actions. Now, in Fixed On You, I really loved her. I loved how strong she was and how much she tried to overcome her past problems. In Found In You, she made so many wrong decisions. Alayna is supposed to be a smart girl. She has an MBA and a creative mind. How could she not see all the things that we readers saw? Celia was working some kinda evil mojo and we knew it and other characters knew it, but Alayna was clueless.

Hudson is my favorite kind of hero. He's wonderful and romantic and sweet. And, at times a total jackass and completely controlling. He's the best kind of flawed. I hate those guys that are too damn perfect. And, Hudson is anything but perfect.

All the missteps and secrets were bound to cause things to go to crap. And, as horrible as it sounds, that was what kept me absolutely glued to this story. I just knew that the other shoe would drop eventually and when it did, I was wondering how they would make it out. IF they would make it out. And, the journey there was not without some twists and turns and surprises along the way.

I really like Laurelin Paige's writing style. She knows how to create compelling characters and keep the reader interested in what happens to them. Sophie is evil, Mira is sweet, Jack is charming, David is meek. All these characters have totally different personalities and mannerisms, and they're all totally believable.

Found In You is told entirely from Alayna's POV, just as the first book was too. I really, really wish there were some bonus Hudson scenes out there somewhere or something because, Laurelin Paige has done such a great job of keeping so much of Hudson hidden (from both Lannie and from the reader) that it's really driving me insane not knowing what's going on in his gorgeous head. So, Laurelin, if you could do something about that, that would be awesome. :)

This series has completely captivated me; I cannot wait to find out how it all ends for these two. While there's no cliffhanger at the end of Found In You, there are some definite loose ends still hanging out there that are bound to continue creating challenges and roadblocks on the road to happiness. I wouldn't have it any other way.

GREAT NEWS! Until October 6, Fixed On You (Fixed #1) will be on sale in digital formats for only $0.99. If you haven't read it yet, this is the perfect opportunity to get started on this awesome series!

(From Goodreads) Stalking and restraining orders are a thing of Alayna Wither’s past. With her MBA newly in hand, she has her future figured out—move up at the nightclub she works at and stay away from any guy who might trigger her obsessive love disorder. A perfect plan.

But what Alayna didn’t figure on is Hudson Pierce, the new owner of the nightclub. He’s smart, rich, and gorgeous—the kind of guy Alayna knows to stay away from if she wants to keep her past tendencies in check. Except, Hudson’s fixed his sights on her. He wants her in his bed and makes no secret of it.

Avoiding him isn’t an option after he offers a business proposition she can’t turn down and she’s drawn further into his universe, unable to resist his gravitational pull. When she learns Hudson has a dark history of his own, she realizes too late that she’s fallen for the worst man she could possibly get involved with. Or maybe their less than ideal pasts give them an opportunity to heal each other and finally find the love their lives have been missing
.

If you loved Sylvia Day's Crossfire series, then you're seriously gonna LOVE Fixed On You by Laurelin Paige.

Lannie Wither is a girl who has been known to fall in love too hard and too far. It has gotten so far in the past that she has been charged with stalking and trespassing. After therapy, an MBA and purposely not entering into any relationship with a man she could potentially love, she thinks she's pretty much better. Then Hudson Pierce walks into her bar and asks her to pretend to be engaged to him to fool his evil mother. Lannie thinks she has what it takes to separate love and a job. Hudson thinks he's safe because he's incapable of loving anyone. Those two crazy kids.

I really loved this book. I could really relate to Alayna. Although I've never been arrested for stalking or anything nuts like that, I can appreciate feeling like you love someone so much you can't let them go. And, I know how crappy that is. I loved Alayna's strength. She has tried so hard to separate herself from her past and not let it define her. Even though her awful brother keeps shoving it in her face every chance he gets.

I thought Hudson was an awesome character as well. He, too, has had difficulties to overcome and has done his best with what he has been given. Hudson is a study in the lesson that money cannot buy happiness. His mother is the absolute worst. She has spent nearly his entire life telling him he's not only not worthy to be loved, but that he's incapable of loving someone back. Yet, he's become a very successful business man with lots of superficial friends.

I really loved how Hudson and Lannie interacted together. I liked how Lannie tried and tried to keep her feelings separate. And, how, when she felt herself starting to slip back into old patterns, she got some help and tried to communicate. These two don't have an easy road ahead of them, but I think they are both determined enough to try things for real. Lannie gives Hudson hope that he really can have a real relationship, and Hudson convinces Lannie that she's capable of real love. I guess the overarching theme for this book is hope. And how important it is to have hope if you're going to face down the challenges that life throws at you.

Fixed On You is told in Lannie's POV. I'd love to get inside Hudson's head at some point. I bet it's crazy awesome in there. The heat between these two is scorching. It's not only a super sexy book, it's really sweet too. I love the banter and the silliness that Lannie and Hudson experience sometimes. And, I love how protective of her he can be at times.

Fixed On You was a really great romantic story. I am looking forward to continuing their story in Found In You (Fixed #2), out in early October.
