EXCERPT REVEAL: The 27 Club

If the gorgeous cover and intriguing premise of Kim Karr's new sexy adult contemporary standalone, THE 27 CLUB, don't draw you in... this excerpt will. Read on for a sneak peak at this new book, out on March 3.

The 27 Club, by Kim Karr
To Be Published March 3, 2015
Publisher: Berkley Romance Genre: adult contemporary romance
To Pre-order: Amazon * Barnes & Noble

(Synopsis) You don’t know when…
You don’t get to choose if…
When it’s time to join…you’ll know.

You might think you want to be a member—but trust me this is one club you don’t want to join. It’s not a place where people go to live out their deepest, darkest sexual desires—there are no handcuffs or blindfolds.

The 27 Club only admits those who die young and tragically. My brother was recently bestowed membership and joined many of our ancestors before him. I know I’m next. This is my destiny, and I was ready to yield.

But then I met Nate. He awakened a sensuality in me that had never been explored, never satisfied. I knew then I could no longer accept my destiny. Nate’s presence controls me. I’m overwhelmed by his touch, his words; my every thought is consumed by desire. I believe he was brought into my life for a reason.

Nate doesn’t believe in destiny.

But I do.

And if there’s a way to cheat it—I must.

The wind howls and the palm trees whip against the windows as the storm seems to make its way closer to landfall. Thunder booms and lightning lights up the room, startling me. No, not lightning—a lamp.

“Hello, Zoey.” The voice is deep and husky.

As the sound registers, I scream. I quickly sit up and scan my unfamiliar surroundings. My eyes immediately land on the silhouette of a man standing beside me, and I scream again, this time scrambling off the bed in terror.

In this moment, my heart stops beating, my lungs stop breathing, and my brain stops thinking. I’m petrified.

The man raises his palms up in surrender. “Zoey, I’m Nate, Z’s friend. You don’t have to be scared. I’m not going to hurt you.”

My fear must be evident. I stare at him for a few long moments, both alarmed and trembling. Only once realization sets in, that yes, this is Nate, my brother’s best friend, do I attempt to calm my ragged breaths.

He takes a cautious step back. “Just cover up with something so we can talk.”

Oh my God, my clothes.

Tangled sheets catch on my limbs as I climb back onto the bed and unsuccessfully try to pull the covers over my practically naked body. Before humiliation grabs complete hold of me, I give up and dive for my soaking wet shirt lying on the floor.

Sliding the cold fabric over my head, I pull it down to cover my panties and stand up, quickly crossing my arms over my chest to shield any signs of the chill I’m feeling.

Not great, but better. At least I can look at him with a little dignity.

Finally, I glance up and my gaze catches his. As soon as it does, he drops his eyes.

The photos I’ve seen of him over the years, when my brother would text me a funny shot—a selfie of him and Nate at some top chef restaurant, at the beach, or at a coffee house—didn’t nearly do him justice. Those shots were goofy poses with baseball caps turned backwards and funny faces. Not that I didn’t think he was good looking in them, because I did, but there’s just something different about him.

I blink and focus on the matter at hand. “You scared the shit out of me. What are you doing here?”

Staring at the ground, he leans against the door jam. “You beat me to the punch. I was just about to ask you the same question.”

“Why would you ask me that?”

He raises a brow. “I guess I’m just curious.”

I sigh, feeling confused.

His gaze lifts, and those eyes, those bewitching emerald green eyes, stare back at me. “Not that I mind that you’re here. It’s just—a little warning would have been nice. That’s all.”

His tone is more bemused than apologetic.

I’m not sure what to think.

With a straight and confident stance, I clear my throat. “I e-mailed you earlier today to let you know that I was coming for the weekend. I’m really sorry about the late notice, but I decided at the last minute.”

He reaches into the pocket of his low-slung jeans and pulls out his phone. After a few taps and scrolls he looks up at me. “I guess you did. Here it is. I’m usually on top of my e-mails but today my . . . schedule was full. Had I seen your message, I would have tried to rearrange my plans.”

“That’s fine really. I managed. It’s not a big deal.”

I steal a glance at my reliable Timex—just after midnight. What is he doing in my brother’s house in the middle of the night? Just as I’m about to ask him, my eyes catch sight of the way he predatorily walks around the room and I’m momentarily distracted. He moves like a panther— slowly circling his prey, keeping his distance, not too close, but close enough to pounce if he feels the urge. He settles back against the wall, just a little closer now. “Zoey, did you hear me?”

I swallow. “Sorry, what?”

His tone grows more insistent. “I said I would have at least sent a car for you. You shouldn’t be out in this weather on your own.”

My brow furrows. Why is he still talking about the airport?

When I don’t respond, he crosses his arms over his chest like he owns the place.

It’s then that reality sinks in. And as clichĂ© as this sounds, I am not going to let Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome intimidate me. It’s time to take charge. “There was no need. I managed just fine. But if you didn’t know I was coming, can I ask what you’re doing here?”

Confusion seems to have taken over his thoughts as he steps even closer—moving with a lethal grace that makes my body start to hum. I can’t help but study him as his features come into clear focus. His body is long and lean. His hair is dark, the most unusual shade of brown, maybe like the color of expensive chocolate, but not exactly. His eyes are languid, watchful, and the most beautiful shade I’ve ever seen—darker than emeralds or the deepest of forest greens. His
lips look full and soft. He is handsome in a way that is unlike anyone I’ve ever seen.

My mind is going haywire.

A look of realization seems to cross his face as he stares at me.

“Nate, why are you at my brother’s house in the middle of the night?” I ask him again.

With a smirk, he ignores my question. Instead of answering me, he opens the door beside him. It’s a closet, Zach’s closet to be exact, and he steps right in, again like he owns the place.

“What are you doing?” I ask impatiently.

He comes back into the bedroom with a pair of sweatpants and a T-shirt in his hand. “You’re trembling. How about you get changed and we sit down to talk?”

The audacity of this man is beyond comprehension. From his e-mails he seemed nice, but then again, you never can tell what lurks behind the words on a computer screen.

He stares and his small smirk really irritates me. “Take these, they’re mine. I’ll wait downstairs while you get changed.”

If I weren’t standing here, chilled and in my underwear, I might just tell him to go to hell. But instead I reach for the clothes, and as I do, I start to wonder if he’s been squatting in my brother’s house. Once the clothes are in my hands, his mouth spreads into a slow, easy grin.

Annoyance grabs hold of me as I pivot on my bare feet and head toward the bathroom, making sure not to glance over my shoulder. When I hear heavy footsteps, I let my body fall back and shut everything out of my mind for a few short seconds.

What is going on?

When I’ve gathered my composure, I quickly strip out of my wet clothes and redress. Then I make the mistake of looking in the mirror. A wet dog would look better than I do right now. In an effort to improve the image, I grab a towel and wipe the black mascara from under my eyes. Then I use my fingers to comb through my mass of curls and try to calm them, but that’s nearly impossible.

Okay, better—but not great.

Who cares anyway?

It’s not like I’m trying to impress him. In fact, I’ve never tried to impress a man.

Ever.

(From Goodreads) He didn’t think, he didn’t question—he just acted.

What she wanted, she took—without regard. It was only one night, but it changed everything.

After losing his fiancĂ©e, Ben Covington is unsure he’ll ever love again. But when he sees Bell Wilde, he’s so deeply drawn to her, that he’s thrown for a loop. Maybe it’s purely sexual chemistry that’s igniting this spark between them...or maybe it’s his second chance at love.

Bell has just gotten her life back on track and may not be up for the challenge of Ben Covington. But once they’re reunited, there’s no holding back—even if a secret from Bell’s past just might shatter them both.

Okay Ben. Okay. I forgive you for your previous transgressions. Although my heart will always belong to River, I've decided now that you're pretty cool too. We're good. *fist bump*

After a tough year, Ben has finally turned a corner. He's determined to put aside all the bad feelings and things that caused him to stumble before. That includes Bell, River's sister, and the one he cheated on Dahlia with. But, when he sees her by chance, he realizes that getting over her will be much harder than any of the other vices he abandoned.

I had a hard time starting this book. I was never Ben's biggest fan. Cheating is a hard line for me. And, when I found out that Ben had cheated on the woman who later became his fiance, he was essentially dead to me. I wasn't quite sure he deserved a HEA like River, Xander, Bell, Aerie and Dahlia. But, Kim Karr hasn't let me down yet, and I'm loving the Connections series and wanted to continue with it beyond this book. I hate not knowing things, so I figured, Ben's story was one I had to endure.

But, although I can't say I love Ben like I love the other men in this series, I can honestly say, I no longer have a big problem with him. He definitely made a lot of mistakes in the past, but he made huge strides to rectify them. And, the people in his life that should have a problem with him recognize that and have made amends as well.

It was obvious at the end of the novella Blurred that Ben was drowning his sorrows from the break-up with Dahlia in all the wrong ways. He was indulging in women and alcohol - both to excess. And, he really was a complete jerk. He seemed a different man in Frayed, though. He finally has his head screwed on straight and is ready to turn his life around.

Bell and Ben actually make a great couple. Bell is feisty and strong and has her own issues from the past that are currently affecting the possibility of them having something together. She has a lot of guilt and bad feelings she has to sift through. And, Ben helps her through it. I loved watching them fall in love all over again. Their dates were sweet and, I have to admit it, the chemistry between them was undeniable.

One of the best parts is seeing the other characters' lives continuing to unfold while we watched Ben and Bell get their stuff together. We get to catch up with River and Dahlia, Xander and Ivy and Aerie and Jagger. I love how all these characters' lives are intertwined - and, especially now with Ben and Bell together. Things were set up at the end of Frayed for the next book with Caleb. I can't wait to see where everyone is then.

MUSIC HAS THE POWER TO HEAL ALL…BUT NOT ALL BROKEN HEARTS CAN BE MENDED.

Always in control, Xander Wilde considered life on the road to be a perfect fit for him. But when disaster strikes on the Wilde Ones’ latest tour, fate intervenes…and a newly single Ivy Taylor, the only girl he has ever loved, steps back into his life.

After moving past her painful breakup with Xander years ago, Ivy was poised to become the next big name in pop music…when suddenly she withdrew from the limelight—the same day she announced her engagement to her controlling agent, Damon Wolf.

Xander knows he should keep his distance. But once they’re on the road, he can’t resist pursuing her for a second chance. Yet a jealous Damon can’t let her go—and he’s keeping dangerous secrets that could destroy them all.

When the three of them come together, everything falls apart. But if Xander and Ivy can hold tight to the bond that connects them, they just might have a chance at reclaiming the powerful love they thought they had lost forever...

Mended was another emotional addition to the Connections series by Kim Karr. I am really loving this series.  The characters, the drama, the backstories - they're all so very compelling, and they keep me up reading into the wee hours of the morning.

Xander and Ivy were an amazing couple when they were 18. Then a series of events caused everything to fall apart, and they went their separate ways. Both Ivy and Xander made it in the music industry, but they never really got over one another. When Ivy ends up touring with Xander's band, they have a chance to finally get it right and mend their broken hearts.

I loved Xander in Connected and Torn. He's very intense and no-nonsense. He tells it like it is, no matter what. He's very protective of those he loves - particularly his brother and sister. And, it's clear that Ivy affects him like no one else. From the beginning, we see that he's never gotten over her and seeing her with someone else kills him.

You can't blame Ivy for being so cold to Xander. She's working under some assumptions that Xander has never refuted. I'd have been an ice queen too, in her shoes. I give Ivy mad props for sucking it up and trying to compartmentalize her feelings for Xander when she asks to join up with the band. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement if she and Xander can keep it together. No doubt it wasn't easy for her to be in that situation.

I love how Xander uses the tour as his golden opportunity to bring Ivy back to him. The seemingly easiest thing to do would be for him to just sit her down and tell her the whole truth about what happened 12 years earlier. But, Xander being Xander, he tries to re-build a relationship with her based on their new shared experiences. It works to a point - it helps make things less volatile between them. But, inevitably, that long-overdue conversation just had to happen.

It was my favorite part in the book. When truths are shared and motivations are realized, it changes the perception of absolutely everything. It doesn't necessarily make things easier - I'm glad that was recognized here. In some cases, it makes things even harder, or at least more complicated. But, to see these two who had been nursing certain hurts for so many years come together and start to mend, it was a great moment.

Aaaaaand... like all really good books, things soon go to crap once again. My heart was in my throat and I was poised to throw my Kindle as I read on. Hallmarks of a great book, right there. Damon was a really good bad guy. It was so easy to hate him. It was actually because of Damon that I didn't rate Mended higher, though. In the end, it felt like he got off too easily. For all the truly awful things he did, this guy NEEDED to suffer. And, he didn't, which was really disappointing.

Despite the lack of appropriate commupance for the bad guy, Ivy and Xander made for a fantastic story. In addition, there was some side drama with River and Dahlia, which I really appreciated. I loved that we got to keep tabs on them, even though we've moved on to his brother's story. I also liked the few glimpses we got of Aerie and Jagger. It seems like we might see a lot more of Aerie in future books, which is awesome. Because I totally love Jagger. :)

Mended was told in dual POV (my favorite!) and was paced really well. I really loved this addition to the Connections series, and can't wait to read more!

Rock star River Wilde brought Dahlia London back from the brink of hopelessness with his unwavering love and devotion. But their entangled history is about to test the strength of their relationship…

Dahlia was certain she had found true love and met her 'Once in a Lifetime’ when she reconnected with River. But Dahlia’s world comes crashing down when someone from her past resurfaces, and all of River’s carefully hidden secrets are exposed.

River wants to show Dahlia that life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass—it’s about dancing in the rain. But how many times can one broken heart be mended?  Will River and Dahlia be able to stay together or will they be torn apart?

Following the conclusion to Connections (Connections #1), I knew I was going to have to read Torn almost immediately. Connections ended in a most unexpected and cliffhangery way (the good kind of cliffhanger, not the bad kind). And, based on the description of Torn and what I could glean from the end of Connections, I expected Torn to include a ton of love triangly angst. So I was super thrilled when that didn't end up being the case.

River and Dahlia have finally found their way to each other, through years and tears and lots of hard work. And now a blast from Dahlia's past has the power to single-handedly destroy the life they're working so hard to build, but only if Dahlia allows it to. Meanwhile, River has to stand back and let the chips fall where they may, and when it comes to the woman he loves, patience is not a virtue in his arsenal. The question is whether he can hold it together while Dahlia figures things out.

Holy moly - if I thought Connections was emotional, I definitely wasn't prepared for Torn. River's hard work to win Dahlia over in Connections endeared me to him in a big way. So, I was always solidly on Team River. When Dahlia has a choice to make between him and someone else, I was still all, "Go Team River!" I never wavered.

The really awesome thing about Torn was, Dahlia's reactions to a situation that presents itself were not what I had expected, especially given her response to her fiance's death in the beginning of Connections. I wouldn't have been a bit surprised if Dahlia had waffled a bit - wavered in her loyalties to River just a smidge. I maybe wouldn't have even blamed her for it. But, for once in a new adult book, our heroine made the smart choice from the get-go. Although shocked and dismayed, her dedication to River and her new life with him never faltered. So, now I'm all, "Go Team Dahlia!"

River has a ton of reasons to be wary of his future now. In Torn, he's the one who has the most trouble dealing with the fallout of Dahlia's haunting past. Despite her constant reassurances, he struggles in some pretty bad ways with what he sees as potentially the end of his charmed life with the woman he loves. He drinks a lot. He stops communicating. And this is a far cry from the River we met in Connections. He had no trouble communicating then. The thought that Dahlia might not choose to be with him terrifies him and turns him into a different person.

Despite his trouble talking about what his hang-ups are, River's love for Dahlia never wavers even for a second.

I can't even explain to her what I see what I look at her. I must look at her a hundred times a day and each time I find something else, something more beautiful, than the last time I looked. It's not just her physical beauty that captivates me. Honestly, I don't care if she's wearing a ball gown or sweatpants; her beauty is all of her - it's who she is. And I want to spend the rest of my life looking at her, pulling her to me, loving her. I will spend the rest of my life doing all of those things - of that, I have no doubt.
Once again, Torn is written in dual POV, so we have the delicious experience of being inside Dahlia's and River's head while dealing with their issues. There's also a third POV, told in a unique way (but, I won't give that part away). It's another hot, sexy read from Kim Karr, and one that has definitely solidified me as a fan. I'm well and truly hooked on the Connections series now and can't wait for the next book to come out.

What if a ‘Once in a Lifetime’ could happen twice?

Suffering from a past full of tragedy, Dahlia London's soul has been left completely shattered. Happily ever after is a far cry from reality in her world. But, when she is reconnected with her past, the bonds that form are irrefutable.

When River Wilde, lead singer of The Wilde Ones, comes back into Dahlia’s life, the intensity that fires their relationship combined with underlying feelings that have never died lead her to believe she has met her soulmate.

Struggling with confusion as old connections fade and new ones begin, Dahlia's grief begins to lift--but guilt remains. River wants to be the one to mend all that is torn within her.

But with a past that is never really gone, can their future survive?

Talk about a roller coaster ride of emotions. Connected took me from tears to bliss in before I could say hubba-hubba. Dahlia was a great heroine and River... holy smokes.

Dahlia knows loss. Her parents died when she was 14 and her fiance is murdered right in front of her eyes. That last event nearly destroys her, and for the better part of two years, she isn't really living. And, then she runs into River Wilde, the lead singer of a rising rock band, and a guy she had a brief, but impressionable, encounter with in college. He gives her the opportunity to love again, as long as she can allow herself to do it, knowing it hurts so much when it's taken away.

I have to admit - 10% into Connected I wasn't quite sure if I was going to love it. Because, wow, was it sad and depressing. We experience all of Dahlia's intense grief as she learns of her parents' death, and then her fiance Ben's death. It all very nearly breaks her. The only break in that beginning tension is when she first meets River at a bar. That one encounter is so riveting, you just know it will become important later in the story.

After that initial super depressing start, though - once River entered the picture for good - things got really, really good. There's just something about River. He's presence is very commanding and compelling. You want to read more about him and learn all his secrets. And, it's clear he has a connection with Dahlia that's never gone away.

Certainly, Dahlia's and River's relationship can be classified as intense. From the very beginning, it was hard for them to stay apart. Dahlia's relationship with Ben was the only reason she walked away, and good girl for not cheating, too. So, five years later, after Ben is dead and gone and Dahlia's just wasting away in the house they shared together, River is exactly what she needs.

And, he really fills that job perfectly. River is so dreamy. He's the lead singer and a guitarist in a band - you know I love those guys. And, his brief encounter with Dahlia very literally changed his life. River hasn't exactly spent the last five years pining away for her, but he has definitely never forgot her. So, when he gets his second chance with Dahlia, he jumps at it with both feet. Luckily, Dahlia is finally read to put on her big girl panties and get on with her life, and she recognizes that River is the right guy to do it with.

There were definitely some twists and turns as the story got going. River was hiding a few secrets that he tried to protect Dahlia from. Dahlia had a lot of baggage she needed to deal with. I liked that, even though falling in love with each other seemed relatively easy, it didn't mean that everything was all hunky dory. It was impossible to not love River's patience and unwavering support, as well as Dahlia's strength.

Connected was told in dual POV, which was great because I loved hearing River's side of the story. Dahlia's and River's relationship was SUPER hot (loved that!) and super romantic. And, the ending made me want to scream in frustration. It was a great cliffhanger ending that made me want to move right into the next book in the series. If you're looking for a good, romantic, angsty story to pass this long, LONG winter, Connected would be perfect.
