Sports romances are my jam. It seems that, out of all the different sports out there, that hockey is the one sport that I've seen the most of (and read the most of). But, without a doubt, baseball is my personal favorite sport, and the baseball books I've read have been great. But, The Player is absolutely the best of them all. 

The Player is perfection. Easton is everything I love in a sports hero. He's cocky and talented and a little bit tortured. He's the son of a legend, so he constantly feels the pressure of living in his father's shadow. Easton is a natural leader, and his teammates look up to him and respect him. The game is everything to Easton, at least until Scout pings his radar. 

Scout and Easton have something in common - she too is trying to live up to her famous father's expectations. Her father is the foremost physical therapist in baseball. The only club he hasn't held a contract for yet is Easton's Austin Aces, so when Easton is injured, it's time to fulfill that dream. Except, since he is ill, the responsibility to rehabilitate Easton and earn the contract falls to his daughter. 

Scout is supposed to remain detached and determined. Easton is supposed to remain focused and ambitious. But, from the very first moment they meet, there's this underlying sexual tension that muddies the waters and makes it difficult for both of them to stay completely focused on their end goals. 

However, I happen to believe that the connection they have and the relationship they develop make things better for both of them. Yes, their attention is split between their jobs and each other, but the support and love they get in return makes them better people. Easton has someone to talk to about the pressure he faces to get better and return to the game he loves. He also has someone to confide in about his mother and her illness. Scout can talk to Easton about how scared she is of losing her father and not measuring up to his expectations. And together they find something neither of them have had before. 

Scout and Easton are an incredible couple. They share this love of the sport, but from different aspects. They compliment each other so well. The pages where they got to know each other were so enjoyable, and I found myself dreading the ending. Not because of the cliffhanger (although there was a small one of those), but more because I was having such a good time reading their story, I didn't want it to end. 

I loved The Player so much. I've never read something by K. Bromberg that I didn't love, but The Player may be one of hers I have loved the most.

As expected, I blew through this novella set in the Sweet Cheeks world. Sweet Cheeks was one of my most favorite books in 2016, so to say I was highly awaiting the release of this add-on novella, was putting it mildly. 

We all got the impression in Sweet Cheeks that Saylor's meddling older brother Ryder had his own story to tell. His actually started thirteen years earlier in college when he finally stole a heated kiss with the girl who constantly challenged him in all his classes. And right after that, she ran out of the room, and he didn't see her again. Until the moment she walks into the room of other hot shot estimators and realizes that she's going to be his biggest competition for the bid of a new construction job. 

Harper has something to prove - not just to Ryder Robert - the boy who she had an immense crush on, but who infuriated her more than anyone else in college. She has to prove to the boys club that a woman can play in the deep end with them. And win. And the only one she sees as a threat to that is Ryder. 

Second-chance romances are one of my favorite tropes. Although they usually involve some sort of heartbreak (there's a reason they NEED a second chance, after all), I absolutely love reading about these two sifting through all their baggage and rediscovering who they are now and realizing there's even MORE to love. Sweet Rivalry is a great example of that. 

Thirteen years is a long time. Both Ryder and Harper have collected a lot of experiences in that time while on opposite ends of the country. I loved that they both acknowledged that, although they didn't exactly pine away for each other that whole time, they definitely didn't forget each other either. They both moved on with their careers and relationships, and now they are both back in the same city. 

My favorite part of the book is when they have this surprise meeting in a high-stress situation. Thanks to the dual POV, we know how much it affects each of them, and watching them try to hide that reaction is fun. And then begins the dance. You know - the one where they keep a close eye on each other but try to not make it obvious that they're keeping a close eye on each other? So awesome. 

One thing K. Bromberg does remarkably well in all her books is create sexual tension so thick that it takes on a life of its own. And then when it can't be contained anymore, it EXPLODES. So, I take what I said earlier back. When that happens - THAT is my favorite part of this book. 

Ryder and Harper's story was fantastic. It was over too quickly, with an ending that came a bit too soon for me. I also wanted more than just a off-hand mention of Saylor and Hayes (but, that one brief mention packed a punch!) - it would've been awesome to actually see them. But, I do realize that when you're limited to 120 pages, you gotta stick to the story at hand. 

I don't know if this is the last we'll see from the Sweet Cheeks world, but if it is, I'm so glad that K. Bromberg gave us this last HEA from this world that I've come to love so much. 

He takes a step toward me then hesitates, but before I can process anything else, his lips are on mine.

And not just on mine––not just a brush of lips against lips—but I’m talking all in. Hands on my cheeks, tongue licking between my lips, body pressed against mine, groan in the back of his throat, type of all in.

I don’t react at first. I’m stunned. Flabbergasted, my mind reeling from the anger to the surprise to now this without any warning at all.

This is Ryder.

My rival.

My supporter.

My crush.

The thoughts flicker that this is what I’ve wanted. But they soon shift to panic. To insecurity I don’t kiss well enough. That this is all a joke and I’m the butt of it.

But then I feel. Everything. All at once.

And I know this is real.

It’s like I can’t catch my breath and have too much air all at the same time.

My body is on fire. And not just from his touch but from that burn deep inside that feels like it’s exploding and imploding all at once.

For those of you who know K. Bromberg from her Driven series, let me say this. This is not Driven. 

It's better. 

Now, before you cry blasphemy too loudly, hear me out. I gave the entire Driven series 5 stars. It introduced me to this incredible author. And Colton Donovan is so incredible. But Hayes Whitley absolutely destroyed me in all the best ways. Sweet Cheeks was sheer perfection. 

Sweet Cheeks is the best second-chance romance I've ever read. Ten years earlier, Hayes and Saylor were so in love. Then Hayes left her without a single word for the bright lights of LA. Saylor, although devastated, moved on and eventually opened her own cupcake shop and got engaged, only to break things off with her fiancé right before the wedding. Months later, her business is in trouble due to her fiance's powerful family blackballing it. And then, she gets invited to her own wedding. Except, she's been replaced by a different bride. 

Saylor does what we all would want to do - she accepts and says she's bringing a date. I mean, who wouldn't want to do that to the guy who's made your life difficult just because you were trying to be honest with yourself? Problem is, she doesn't have a date. Enter her meddling older brother who still happens to talk to Hayes all these years later, even though he's now an A-list Hollywood movie star. Hayes shows up and takes Saylor to the destination wedding, and those feelings she thought were gone fly to the surface with one look. One touch. But his job is still a barrier, as is an ex of his. And just when Saylor thought her life couldn't get more complicated - enter the paparazzi.

I ran the gamut of emotions while reading Sweet Cheeks. Reading about how Saylor's ex-fiance and his family have treated her and caused her business to stall, and then later in the book when they say awful things about her to her face and to the media, made me want to rage at them on her behalf. Saylor's and Hayes' thoughts on the demise of their relationship when they were teens brought tears to my eyes. Their antics and playful moments now as adults made me smile and laugh. and Hayes' efforts to win Saylor over for good at the end - I swear to you, I've never, EVER swooned harder before in my life. 

This is one of those books that I wish I could go back and read it again for the first time. I loved every second of Hayes' and Saylor's efforts to find their way back to each other again after all this time. I loved watching each of them realize in their own time that they never stopped loving the other. I loved every drop of sexual tension and every moment of uncertainty when they reflected on whether they could risk their hearts again.

I'm such a wreck. I'm over here turning a playful twirl in the moonlight into a kiss I don't want to want, to fantasizing how it would lead to my happily ever after.

The end is one of the best book endings ever for a romantic girl like me. It makes every moment of angst, every angry word, and every past deed disappear with the smash of a cupcake and a well-worded Tweet. This book makes you believe that true love really does conquer all, including time, distance and mean girls. 

Sweet Cheeks is written in dual POV, which was wonderful. I loved getting both Hayes' and Saylor's side of the story, especially regarding the past. This book also is not lacking in the hot, steamy sex department. Hayes and Saylor have an incredible connection borne out of time and experience, and that translates into a powerful physical presence together. K. Bromberg captured all of this so perfectly and more than delivered on her desire to deliver an outstanding story outside of the Driven world.

When I learned Kristy Bromberg was writing a book about little Zander, it was a bit of a disconnect for me. I thought there was no way I could erase the image of him as a kid from my brain in order to embrace the man he has become. Okay, so I was wrong about that. Some things never change - I still felt heartbroken over what Zander was going through, even though his problems now are a bit different than they were when he was a kid. Colton is still an amazing dad (yes - you get some awesome scenes with him). And Zander still loves racing. 

But, other things DO change. How Zander handles his problems now have a much bigger impact on many other lives. And Zander's charm and way with words can make a woman swoon in 5 seconds flat.

"I want you on the kitchen counter, the patio, in your bed, in the woods. I'll take you anywhere you'll have me, Getty, because you make me want you that bad, and I'm not a man who wants much at all. So, when you doubt whatever it is you'll doubt when we're finished here, I want you to remember this. All of it. Because I will deliver on that promise." 

I loved how he was with Getty, who is very obviously fresh from her own tragedy. He didn't read her with kid gloves. He didn't play games with her. They might not share every aspect of their situations right from the get-go, but he made it clear to her where he was in his life and what he could give her. That earned some major respect from me, since you see secrets and lies all the time in romance books. 

"I'm showing you where the lighthouse is, Getty. Giving you a way out. It's up to you to decide if you want to step into my storm before it passes through or head for safety. I can't decide for you."

But, Zander also wasn't one to shy away from his feelings when he realized they were changing. He never failed to protect Getty when she needed it. And, he didn't shirk his responsibilities. Zander has grown up to be an incredible man, and Getty was the perfect woman for him and his lifestyle. 

Now that Zander's story is out there, I want to hear from the rest of the boys, including Ace. 

“You don’t know anything about me.” My voice is slight but strong, my need to assert myself front and center despite his calling me on the carpet.

“That’s where you’re wrong, Socks. I might not know where you’re from or why I ruffled your feathers today, but I know you’re stronger than you give yourself credit for. Whatever it is that you ran from back home, you did it. You got out and are making it on your own. That takes guts and you deserve mad props for that. I know you like things messy and are goddamn cute when you’re tipsy. I know you’re stubborn as hell and gorgeous as fuck. And that your kiss tastes like an aged whiskey: something I want to sip slowly, feel on my lips, savor on my tongue, and take my time with before I get drunk on it.” With a lift of his eyebrows and a nod of his head, he walks past me, leaving me with my mouth agape and eyes wide.

I can’t move. Just stand staring at the door in front of me as I try to process what he just said, what he meant by it, and yet there’s no use because we just had a whole one-sided conversation and that need to banter with him is gone. Lost to the tingling in my lower belly and the wild spinning of my thoughts.

“Oh, and, Getty?” Zander calls out to me from the kitchen, refusing to continue until I turn to face him, standing there unabashedly shirtless. “If you ever call me pretty again, we’re gonna have a real problem. I guarantee you there is nothing pretty about me.”

I almost smile at the fact that out of all of the crappy things I said to him, that is the one that bugged him the most.

“You are kind of pretty, though,” I murmur, unable to resist goading him further, needing to try to get us back on an even playing field. Because hell if right now I don’t feel like I’m on the low end of the teeter-totter.

His immediate response? A snort to signify that his chiseled abs and the tall, dark, and handsome thing he’s got going on are nothing more than average.

“Last warning, Socks.” His eyes flash with mirth. And what looks like desire.

An unexpected part of me—the one who usually hides and doesn’t ever take a chance—wants to say it again. Just to see what he’d do if I did.

“So damn pretty.” I don’t know who’s more shocked at my comment, him or me, but we stand there for a moment, gazes locked, unspoken words warring across the distance between us.

I read Driven, Fueled and Crashed all in a row a year ago. I could not get enough of Colton and Rylee, and when the story was over, of course I wanted more. Finally, K. Bromberg has given me - and scores of other fans - exactly that.

If I hadn't read Crashed and that fantastic epilogue, I would've been biting my nails a lot more while reading Aced. Because, holy crap. Colton and Rylee just could not catch a break. And, unfortunately, the bumps in their road to a "piece of peace" are larger than most people have to deal with. 

Rylee has found out she's pregnant, and after six years of marriage, everything seems completely perfect in hers and Colton's lives. That's when everything starts to fall apart. First is Colton's lack of confidence in his ability to be a good father. Next comes a media scandal that completely uproots both Rylee's and Colton's lives and has untold ripple effects. Finally comes the unexpected result of all this stress on Rylee's and Colton's first few months as parents. 

Colton, especially, has gone through a lot in his life. You can't come from where he came from and not have serious misgivings about bringing life into this world. So, I get it. I get why Colton was out of this world happy and utterly terrified all at the same time when Rylee became pregnant. Luckily, he has learned how to communicate far better than he used to, so he bounces things off Rylee, Becks, his father, and even the boys from The House when he needs advice. He has come so far. 

Rylee has always been the strong one, and in Aced, we see that not everyone is strong all the time. She weathers a lot, but there comes a point where she just can't take any more. Luckily, her support system is just as robust as Colton's. Haddie, Quin, her mother and mother-in-law all rally around her, with Colton always by her side, and help her when she needs it the most. 

But, the absolute best part is the love and trust and utter devotion that Colton and Rylee have for one another. Especially Colton. He always knows the right thing to say and do when Rylee needs reassurance or comforting. This man - he. Is. Amazing.

"I know you're disciplined and modest and hate coloring outside the lines, but that you do sometimes just for me. The fact that you do means the world to me. And more than anything, I love that you raced me even when I didn't have any wheels on the fucking track."

If you like angst, then you really need to read Aced. There isn't much levity, but when it comes, of course it comes during conversations between Colton and Becks. I love their friendship so much. 

And, if this series is new to you, then you really need to start it. Driven, Fueled and Crashed tell the story of Colton's and Rylee's road to relationship bliss. Aced starts six years later and fills in some blanks. All the other books that K. Bromberg has written in the Driven world - Slow Burn, Sweet Ache and Hard Beat - take place in the time period between Crashed and Aced. References are made to Tanner's and Quin's significant others, and of course, Haddie and Becks are still together, so everything is tied together nicely. 

Of course, I would never object to more Colton and Rylee, but it appears that, at least for now, their story is done. Now, perhaps someday in the future, we'll get to read more about the boys - Shane, Zander and Austin. I would definitely read those books. But, for now, I'm content learning how Colton and Rylee got to their happily ever after.

“I talked to my parents. To Tanner. To Shane.” My voice fades off as the disbelief I have to take stock and let him know the damage control I’ve done takes hold. Unsure how to respond to me when he’s always so sure, he just nods his head as our eyes hold steadfast. “I just don’t know...” My voice is so soft, it sounds so very different than the storm of anger that rages inside me, and yet I can’t find it within me to show my emotions. I can feel his fingers tense from my comment, see his Adam’s apple bob from the forced swallow, and notice the tick of muscle as he clenches his jaw.

“We’ll get through this.”

Colton stares, willing me to say more but I don’t. I just match him stare for hollow stare as images of myself from Google flickering through my mind. Finally he breaks out connection and reaches his fingers to pinch the bridge of his nose before blowing out a sigh.

“Scream at me, Ry. Yell. Rage. Take it out on me. Do anything but be silent because I can’t handle when you’re silent with me,” he pleads. All I can do is shake my head, dig down within myself to will the emotion to come. When I can’t find the words or the feeling behind them, it unnerves him, worries him. “I’m sorry, baby. Were we stupid? Maybe. Do I regret it?” He shakes his head. “I regret all of this, yes, but that in general? No. So many damn things happened that put you and me where we are now. So for that? I’m not sorry. You pushed me that night, made me question if I could give someone more of myself.” He reaches his free hand up to brush a thumb over the line of my jaw. His touch reassuring, his words helping soothe the sting of our situation.

“It’s not your fault,” I say, trying to ease the concern in his eyes.

“Maybe not directly . . . but I made you color outside of your perfectly constructed lines . . . do something against your nature, and look what happened. I’m so sorry. I wish I could make this right,” he says, dropping his head as he shakes his head in defeat. “All I can try to do is mitigate the damage. That’s it.” He throws his hands up. “It’s killing me because I can’t fix this.” The break in his voice and the tension in his body would have told me everything I needed to know even if he hadn’t uttered a sound.

I look at my achingly handsome husband, so distraught, so desperate to make wrongs right that aren’t his to be held responsible for. And seeing him as upset as I am makes me feel a little better and allows me to dig into the deep well of emotion. I finally find the words I need and want to tell him. HARD BEAT is the seventh book in K. Bromberg's Driven series, but if I hadn't just told you that, I doubt you'd know that just by reading it. No doubt about it - this is a different sort of book than what we're used to seeing from Bromberg. Hard Beat might be stressful and edgy and dramatic, but it does still feature a hot bad boy living on the edge. And that's just one of the things that made this book great. 

Hard Beat focuses on Rylee's brother Tanner. He's a foreign war correspondent. I don't know about you, but this profession was a first for me. I've never read a book with a character who had this job before. I wonder what sort of intensive research Bromberg did before writing Hard Beat, because she made Tanner's job come to life. It's clear that it's a dangerous job, but the people who are doing it are 100% dedicated to the thrill of getting the story, no matter the danger. I really felt that through the whole thing. I was constantly worried about Tanner and Beaux as they navigated the intricacies of Middle Eastern politics and the US military presence there. 

That's the other thing that's totally unique about Hard Beat. It takes place nearly entirely in the Middle East. A specific country is never given, but one could assume it's a place like Afghanistan or Iraq. It seems a desolate setting for a book, but given Tanner's and Beaux's profession, it's really perfect. 

Tanner's photojournalist partner has recently been killed on the job, and he's having a hard time getting over it, mostly because she was also his best friend in the world. So, he's been saddled with a new partner - Beaux - and he's having a hard time with that as well. To say that he wasn't nice to her in the beginning is putting it mildly. He resents that she's there to take his former partner's place. And he resents that he's so attracted to her too. He's there to do a job that he's very serious about, and in his mind, Beaux is nothing but an unwanted distraction.

Relationships had always been fun while they lasted, but no one, and I mean no one, has ever made me thing for one iota of a second of hanging up my credentials. The day that happens will be the day I know love from lust.

For her part, Beaux is a tough chick. She has to be to do what she does. So, she fights back. Tanner and Beaux were like oil and water - they just could not get along no matter what happened. Honestly, Tanner was a total asshole to Beaux. I felt so badly for her. And, try as he may, Tanner just can't figure her out. There seems to be two sides to her - the side she allows him to see and the side that she keeps to herself. As their passionately abrasive encounters turn passionately hot and sexy, Tanner starts to question Beaux and her actions more and more. It's clear she's hiding things - he just has no idea what they are or why she won't tell him.

"You want something from me, and it has to do with whatever you're hiding up your sleeve. So now we're playing this game on my terms from here on out. How's it feel to want something you can't have?"

"I understand more than you'll ever know," she whispers.

For the entire book there's this overlying tension that was very palpable. As we get closer and closer to the end, and more of Beaux's secrets come out, that tension was manifested in very real ways on the page. Toward the end, there were a few WTF moments where I was totally confused and couldn't wait to have my questions about Beaux answered. I loved that about Hard Beat. It's for this reason that, unlike the last two books in this series, this is not a dual POV. Tanner tells the whole story, so we find out about Beaux's backstory at the same time he does. I imagine my reaction was pretty similar to his. 

This book was nearly perfect for me - truthfully, the only reason I couldn't give it 5 stars was because of the cover design. I know, I know - how petty, right? But, the couple on the cover looks like they belong in a law firm. Beaux and Tanner NEVER dressed like that - why would they in the middle of the desert? Cover design aside, I personally loved the shift in setting and feel of Hard Beat. It was fascinating and sexy and dangerous. We do see a little of Rylee and Colton, but for the most part, the focus is entirely on Tanner and Beaux and the dangerous job they have to do. There's still a lot more awesome stories to come in the Driven world, and I can't wait to see what's next.

K. Bromberg does it again. Every single book makes me laugh out loud (usually the parts that include Colton in some way). And, every one makes me cry. Sweet Ache was no exception. 

Hawkin Play is a bad boy on the outside and a good guy on the inside. He loves his family - perhaps a bit too much at times. When he takes the fall for his loser twin brother yet again, and finds himself doing community service by teaching a class at the local university, he thinks it's the worst thing that could happen. Until he meets his TA, Quinlan Westin. At first she doesn't want anything to do with Hawk, having sworn off famous playboys for good. But, once she gets to know the real Hawkin, she might change her tune for good.

Hawkin is the front man of his band. He's super tight with all his bandmates, and they seem like they would do just about anything for him. It's his one ex-bandmate that he has to worry about. His twin, Hunter is pretty much a hot mess. He got mixed up in drugs and alcohol and lots of other bad things. Hunter's and Hawk's father wasn't really the best role model for them, and his actions messed up both boys, but especially Hawk, in ways that are nearly impossible to get over. Hawk has tried to made the best of it, and Hunter used it as an excuse. It's because of Hunter's exploits that Hawk is always getting into trouble. And the guilt and remorse are eating him up. 

Blood is thicker than water, but you can still drown in it all the same. 

Because on top of dealing with Hunter's issues, Hawk is also shouldering most of the responsibility for caring for their mother who has Alzheimers. And, in her most confused moments, she blames Hawk for his father's death. Those moments when Hawk is with his mother absolutely ripped my heart out. This boy has dealt with more than any one person should have to deal with in his life. He just needs something good for once. 

Hawkin may be the lead singer of the band, but in this book, Quinlan is the rock star. She is SUCH a cool heroine. She is self-assured and knows exactly who she is. She also knows who her brother is makes her famous by extension, and she's used to people using her and trying to get close to her just because of who she is. I give her mad props for resisting the charming Hawk for as long as she did. But, really. When a man is that sexy, it's impossible to resist for long. 

I know that I won't be able to resist Hawkin's pull on me any longer, that it's stupid to deny myself. To not take the chance to see where this may lead us because when all is said and done, we regret only the choices we didn't take, not the ones we did and failed at.

Quinlan and Hawk are really great together. They keep each other on their toes. They laugh a lot together, which is awesome. But, most of all, Quinlan offers Hawk someone he can lean on, even if he has a hard time telling her everything that has happened to him. She is someone he aspires to be, I think. It's hard for Hawk to allow others to share his burdens, although there are a lot of people who would be willing to do so. Quinlan has an excellent support system already with her brother Colton, his wife Rylee and her parents. When Hawk draws near to her, I think he realizes he could have them by extension too, and although it freaks him out a bit, it also gives him hope. 

But, I look at her and can't fathom how her independence, her strength could make me weak if this were to continue. The idea, the notion, the possibilities begin to spiral out of control, beg me to question things and beliefs so ingrained in me that I've only ever questioned them in theory.

Quinlan gives Hawk the strength to do things he never had the strength to do before. And this, coupled with the amazing chemistry between these two, make them an unbelievable couple. They are hot and fun and so good for one another. 

 

Hawkin

I keep my eyes fixed on the freeway in front of me as I let the comment resonate, knowing it’s truth despite the constant tumult that burdens me. A part of me sags in relief at her observation, knowing that someone else sees the cracks in my resolve while the other part of me begins to question again.

And the scary thing about questions are they usually result in a revolution of some sort. I’m just not sure if I can withstand an overhaul of principles without it resulting in casualties.

“Am I the reason he’s like this Q? How did this person I’ve been with since conception . . . how can we experience the same tragedy but be so completely different? Did I try too hard, protect him too much, throw him to the wolves when I shouldn’t have and end up proving I’m just like Dad?” I speak the questions floating around in my mind aloud, throw them out there even though I know there’s no way in hell she has the answers.

She does nothing more than reach over and lace her fingers with mine, staying silent, but her unconditional support is deafening. Except even with someone beside you, the quiet has a way of smothering you when you’re left alone with just your thoughts. And of course mine turns to where we are headed right now.

On a whim, K. Bromberg decided to try her hand at this writing thing. Her debut novels, Driven, Fueled, and Crashed of The Driven Trilogy were well received and went on to become multi-platform bestsellers as well as landing on the New York Times and USA Today lists. Her other works include a short story, UnRaveled, and a companion piece to The Driven Trilogy titled Raced. She is currently working on three stand alone Driven novels, Slow Burn, Sweet Ache, and Hard Beat. She also plans to release a novel addressing the 10 year gap at the ending of Crashed in late fall 2015
