(Synopsis) Old demons are back.

Maddie’s dealing with the fallout of her choices. Safety and happiness are relative, elusive things she’s desperate to have. But they will forever remain out of reach until the demons of her past are laid to rest.

Tyler’s mistakes resurface to haunt him and he’s just beginning to understand that money can’t fix a broken relationship. He must open his heart and search for answers he’d rather not find.

She wants peace in a world made of chaos.

He wants to rid himself of a lifetime of guilt.

They’re soul mates, but that’s no guarantee.

They’ll need to rely on each other to find their happily ever after.

Because the fight never ends—it just gets easier with someone at your side.

Passion Rising punctuated the fact that, as a whole, the Original Sin series is really more of an experience than just a series of books for you to read. These four books are not just a story of a boy getting a second chance with a girl and, after some drama and some bad stuff happening, living happily ever after. It's not nearly as cut-and-dry and "tropey" as all that.

Once again, I have to be super cagey, because so much of what happens in Passion Rising is a culmination of things that have been happening and building throughout the first three books in this series. I CAN say that this final book is about self-reflection on both Tyler and Maddie's parts. After everything that has happened to them, they are both left saying, "Okay, so now what?" Them being a couple isn't in question - of COURSE they are a couple. But, the health of their coupledom depends largely on how they now see themselves.

If you'll recall, in my review for Sin With Me (Original Sin #1), I said, "Truthfully, these two are some of the saddest and most despondent people I've ever read about." And it was true. The circumstances of Maddie's and Tyler's lives up to this point had lead them to their own versions of hell on earth. They were treading water with no forward movement and no hope.

You would think that with all the crazy stuff that happened to them over the three books prior to Passion Rising, that we would now see a woman and a man broken beyond repair. But, instead, we see the opposite. The events leading up to book 4 forced them to work together, to wade through their past hurts, to face their current fears and to lean on each other.

I love the way these two love each other. They would give their lives for each other and are looking forward to what comes next in their lives. Their banter is adorable, their sex is hot and their love is lasting. It's everything you could want in a romance book. Plus, you get angels, devils (figurative, not literal), action, closure and a really good death scene.

I think JA Huss considers her first collaborative writing effort a success. I know I do. And I'm already looking ahead to what's next from my new favorite writing duo.

(Synopsis) Payback is owed.

And Maddie Clayton is going to collect. This time Carlos and Logan have gone too far. People are dead, lives have been changed, and she’s had enough. Plus, she’s got the Devil on her side, so when an enemy turns into a friend with an idea of how to take Carlos down, she’s in.

Tyler Morgan has been fighting back his whole adult life. He’s ready for anything when it comes to payback. But endangering Maddie can’t be part of the deal. Unfortunately for him, once Maddie gets an idea in her head, there’s no stopping her.

Her debt has been paid in blood and she wants revenge.

His fight is still there, but now he’s got more at stake than himself.

The end is coming.

But even if they win against Carlos, they can still lose each other.

Only these two - only Maddie and Tyler - could find themselves up to their ears in this much crazy.

Things have come to a head with Mexican drug lord Carlos and his menace of a nephew Logan, and Maddie is finished hiding away from the problem, working herself and her soul to the bone for what she knows is a futile effort. Her happiness is going to be hard fought and hard won, and it's going to happen with Tyler by her side.

For the first time in the Original Sin series, the main thrust of the story is not Tyler and Maddie figuring out their relationship. They're there. Maddie has given up the fight and recognized what Tyler knew all along - that they were made to be together. And that no matter what, he's never leaving her again.

Unfortunately, that makes Maddie's desire to go undercover in Carlos' compound not Tyler's favorite plan.

Both Tyler and Maddie are trying desperately to hold on to the slice of happiness that they've found in each other. Both of them were without that kind of happy for so very long. They were both at the bottom of the barrel, and now they've clawed to the top, found a partner, and are ready to take a break from the bad.

It's weird to be on such equal ground with someone. Someone's... partner, I guess. But it's completely awesome at the same time.

But, their methods of finding that new life together are very different. While Tyler is the brawler who has never backed down from a fight, he is the one who would be perfectly content to fly to a deserted island somewhere and never come home. Maddie, on the other hand, wants to be able to look at herself in the mirror every day. She wants to actively fight for the life she wants, and if that means she might die in the process, well then, at least she went down fighting the good fight.

Seeing this dynamic shift between them was really interesting, and I thought it showed an enormous amount of growth in their relationship. They haven't even been together for very long (although, they knew each other for years growing up), and while they spent the first few weeks fighting their attraction - at least Maddie did - now that they know in their souls that this is it, it's like everything has changed for them. And I love that.

Some people search their whole life looking for that one place they belong. For that one person who gets them. Who brings them into their world, lets them fall easily into the pull of their gravity, and lets them just... be. Just exist. Quietly. Naturally. Freely. This is Tyler for me. The center of my universe. The man around whom I now orbit.

I mentioned craziness - there's plenty of that in Flesh on Fire too. Maddie's in a ton of danger nearly from the very beginning of the book as she enters Carlos' compound under false pretenses. There are fights and explosions and near misses and - once again - fires. And, although this book does come to more of a definite close than the first two books in this series, there's some pretty big loose ends left flapping around that I'm sure will lead us into the final book in the series.

I can't wait to see what insane thing Maddie and Tyler will do to punctuate this fun, sexy and exciting series.

(Synopsis) Sometimes angels fall.

Maddie doesn’t really owe drug lord, Carlos Castillo, money. So she hadn’t taken his threats seriously. Until now. He wants it, whether she owes it or not. And if she doesn’t have it in six weeks he’s gonna take her as payment instead.

Tyler would save the world if he could. That’s a fight that lasts forever. And if there’s one thing he’s good at, it’s fighting. So if Maddie thinks she’s gonna deal with an insane drug lord on her own, she’s crazier than he is.

She’s got a debt she can’t pay. He’s got more money than he needs. She’s not gonna fall for his charm. He’s gonna make sure that happens.

They’re destined to be together. Even if Maddie doesn’t know it yet.

Sometimes your soul mate isn’t who you’d choose, it’s who you need.

Good thing you don’t get to choose.

Two books in to the Original Sin series, I'm totally on board with this brand new writing duo. I've been a big fan of Julie Huss' for years now, but this series is her first foray into co-authoring, so I didn't know how it would go. You know? I think I can safely say at this point that I love the work that she's putting out in partnership with actor and audiobook narrator Johnathan McClain. It feels like a JA Huss book, but yet it has a slightly different flavor and voice, which, I think, really is enhancing this reading experience.

Since this is the second book in a four-book series, and a lot of the events in book two are a continuation of things that started in book one, I can't go into a lot of detail about what happened. However, here's what I CAN say...

#RelationshipGoals
In the beginning of Angels Fall, Maddie and Tyler had an insurmountable gulf to overcome if they were to have any sort of relationship. They were also in two very different places as to their future goals - Tyler was all in. He was going after Maddie full boar and was not going to take no for an answer. Maddie, however, wanted nothing to do with Tyler and was sure she could never get over her anger and disappointment in him. However, Tyler's persistence and Maddie's acceptance of things that can't be changed made huge strides, and toward the end of this book, we saw them finally moving in the right direction, which made my heart so freaking happy.

Angry Sex (... and Make-up Sex... and Kinky Sex... and Tunnel Sex... and...)
Maddie hating Tyler for a period of time during this book didn't put any damper on their sex. Like, AT ALL. I was cool with that, because it proved that, even though they were not in a good place, there was still all this passion between them, and that's a start. Even the super angry sex signified hope to me, because if Maddie truly didn't want anything to do with Tyler, I have every confidence, she would've put him in his place and moved on. Instead, they took out their frustrations and their sadness and their love and their anger on each other, and it made for some incredibly awesome reading.

Revisiting the Past
The big focal point of Angels Fall is rehashing what happened to Scotty and how it affected Maddie and Tyler, both individually, and now as a couple. We heard Tyler's account of the events in book 1, and in book 2, we get Maddie's perspective. We get to see the healing affect it has on both of them. Even before Maddie talks to Tyler about it all, we see her taking steps to get past the tragedy - steps she should've taken a long time ago. But, it's in these actions that we can see that, even though she's still incredibly mad at Tyler, his influence in her life now is a positive one. The character growth that the authors have injected into Maddie and Tyler is incredibly satisfying and very well done.

Hope in the Face of Tragedy
Despite Maddie and Tyler getting to a hesitantly good place together by the end of Angels Fall, there's no doubt that there's still plenty of bad stuff swirling around them - particularly Maddie. Drug lord Carlos Castillo still wants his money, and his henchman Logan is wanting a little extra punishment on the side. Both Maddie and Tyler have been so despondent in their lives lately, to the point of each of them contemplating suicide. But, the reconnecting that Maddie starts and the healing that Tyler starts gives them the desire to finally start fighting back. There are some events at the end of Angels Fall that dramatically affect them, and now there is a fire lit beneath them that will carry into book 3. Carlos and Logan better watch out...

(Synopsis) Oliver Shrike thinks ahead. He likes to make lists and tick off boxes. He plans, he plots, and he’s got everything under control.Until one day he sees my videos on his dating site. The private erotic videos I make just for him.

When I’m looking at the camera I can practically see his face. Hear the internal arguments. Feel his desire.

Because I’m that kind of woman.

You should delete my videos, Oliver Shrike. It’s your job to keep that dating site on the up and up.

But you don’t, do you?

You watch them. You get off to them. You crave them.

Every week I make a new one with you in mind. I’ve got you addicted to my body, my moans, my secrets.

I’ve hooked you now, Mr. Match. You’ve been in control for way too long and this is where it ends.

Writing this review is going to be hard. For those of you who are familiar with JA Huss' Mister series, you know that each of the five books has built on the last, adding more and more clues and asking more and more questions. Mr. Match is the final book in this series and is the culmination of everything that has come before in the other four books. You MUST read the other books in order to understand everything that happens in Mr. Match. But, I promise if you do that, your mind will be BLOWN.

Oliver Shrike is all grown up. And HOW. Prior to the Misters series, the last time we saw Oli was in Happily Ever After when he was just a pre-teen hanging with his sisters and his quasi-uncles and their families while on a Christmas ski vacation. Now, he's a 29-year-old business owner and sex God. Like father, like son.

Speaking of his father, going into Mr. Match, I expected to see Spencer and Roni in the book, seeing as how they're his parents and have featured in their own books by JA Huss (Bomb and Guns). But, they were noticeably absent. In hindsight, I think that is a good thing because - let's face it - Spencer and Roni are larger than life, and this really was Oliver's story to tell. He was and needed to be the focus.

But, even though Spencer wasn't in the book, he was still in the back of my mind, as it was easy to draw a lot of correlations between he and his son. In his own books, Spencer and his friends were involved in a dangerous game with violent players and lives on the line. They had to use their individual talents and lean on each other for help in order to come out on the other side alive and well and with their women at their sides. It seems the sins of the father have been visited on the son, because this is exactly what is happening now with Oliver and his friends Mac, Nolan, Weston and Paxton.

How do you plan anything when all you see in your future is threats? When you have things hanging over your head like rape, and secret societies, and murder? How do you live with the fact that even when you're in control, you're never in control?

Only now, Oli has more to fight for since the "one who got away" four years ago is back, and even though he knows she's keeping secrets and is involved in the dangerous drama that is quickly unraveling, he is determined to keep her around this time. Oliver has found his own "bombshell" in the form of Katya, and he will kill to keep her safe.

She is clean, she is good, and most of all, she is loyal in the only way that counts. She loves me, I know it. And I love her, she knows it. We're gonna work out this bullshit that's happening and come out the other side just fine.

In Mr. Match Julie takes time to tie up most of the loose ends that have been systematically created in each of the four previous books. As the details come out and players are revealed and eliminated, the pieces slowly start to fall into place. The master plot and how it all relates to the rape and the murder of a girl ten years earlier - the crime that brought these five guys together - slowly takes form, and the surprises don't stop coming until the very, VERY end. It's really incredible when you look all the way back at Mr. Perfect and the little seeds that were planted. They grew into this enormous twisty mind screw that will make you sit back and say, "WHOA" when you're all done.

There's one plot thread that wasn't quite tied up as neatly as I would've liked, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this particular detail will need its own entire book to straighten out. Which, of course I'm totally okay with.

It's been a crazy road full of secret societies, murderous plots, crazy mean girls, and more romance than you can shake a stick at. Oliver's story was probably the most romantic of them all (yes - even more romantic than Mr. Romantic). It's no surprise that Julie Huss saved the best for last.

I will throw everything away to keep her. I will betray everyone I know. I will make my own deal, sell my own soul if I can just walk beside her in this life. Hold her hand as we face the reality of our decisions together. Give her a home in me, in my love. A safe place where no such thing exists.

EARLY REVIEW: Mr. Mysterious (Misters #4)

Mr. Mysterious (Misters #4), by J.A. Huss

Publisher: self-published
Format: ARC, provided by the author
Genre: adult contemporary romance/suspense/mystery

Rating: 4.5 STARS

(Synopsis) Paxton Vance isn’t as cryptic as he thinks. That broody nature and tough-guy exterior aren’t fooling me one bit.

I know everything about him. I listen in on his most personal phone calls. I read his mail before he does. I even know what his mother got him for Christmas last year.

You’re the man of my dreams, Paxton Vance. You just don’t know it yet.

But don’t worry, I’ll remind you. I’m here to give you everything you need, before you know you need it.

So don’t get defensive because I take a challenge seriously. You have to open up to someone, and that someone is me.

Besides, you can’t stay Mr. Mysterious forever. Why play the game if you never want to win?

I wonder if Julie Huss knew THIS would happen back when she write her first non-YA novel. That a seemingly simple love story about a Tragic girl and her model-perfect boyfriend would give birth to this larger-than-life tale that now spans more than three decades and has spawned one crazy, epic romance after another.

I wonder if she knew then that a chance encounter in a Starbucks would end with the Misters and their Misses.

Mr. Mysterious introduces another Shrike kid to the world, and Cinderella, a.k.a. Baby Bomb, is something else. She's been a peripheral observer to the Mister drama that unfolded ten years ago, and as she grew up, she became obsessed with Paxton Vance. She learned everything she can about him, and has decided to finally make her move. And when Cindy Shrike makes a move, she MAKES. A. MOVE.

I'm still a little surprised that Pax allowed Cindy to get away with everything she did to worm her way into his life. I'm shocked that he didn't toss her out on her ass when he realized she'd broken into his house or stalked his mother or knew his backstory. Her methods were extreme, but when Cindy wants something, she gets it. And she's determined to not only save Paxton, who is the love of her life, but in doing so, she saves her brother as well.

I will figure out his secret. I will figure out what happened that night. I will find all the evidence, I will put all the puzzle pieces together, and I will give him a gift to seal the deal.

I will make it right for all of the Misters.

I like to think that perhaps the reason why Pax allowed Cindy to continue her extreme stalker ways is because he knew deep down that she was something more to him. And that she could give him a measure of freedom that he's never had before. Pax has always been the dark, angry and suspicious one of the five Misters. And Cindy was a breath of fresh air that he desperately needed.

"I want to leave everything - everyone - behind. Stop working and just do nothing for a while. Sit on a beach. Catch fish off a boat in the middle of nowhere. No cell phone, no email, no problems."

When Cindy's craziness is set aside, you can really see how perfect she is for Paxton. They're both good a fixing problems for other people. They're both totally bad ass. And he doesn't have to hide any of the stuff from that night from her since she's been involved since the beginning because of her brother. She loves him and accepts him as he is. And I don't think he knew how much he needed that until she came barreling into his life.

"She's not a fade-away kind of girl. She's going to fight. You have no idea how much fight that girl has. I mean, like I said, one day I was great. Just doing my thing. And then... and then this perfect fucking princess walked into my life."

Ten years ago, a girl was raped an then died, and that altered the trajectory of these five men's lives. It's become obvious that their pasts are coming back to haunt each one of them in turn, but in this book, a few more pieces of the puzzle fit into place, and the new picture it's forming will shock you. It shocked me. All the things you thought you knew will be disproven. And, it's only ensured that the final book in the series - Oliver's book - will be unbelievable.

We've seen whispers of the original Team in the first three Mister books as Five (Ford's son) and Oliver (Spencer's son) have made their presences known. But now with Mr. Mysterious it really feels like I've come home. Full circle.

Oli and Five, together with Ariel and Cindy have formed their own "team" that also includes Mac, Ellie, Nolan, Ivy, Weston, Tori and Paxton. And they are getting shit DONE.

(Synopsis) Weston Conrad is the best headhunter in the business. That handsome smile goes a long way towards convincing most people to trust him with their future. I’m not most people. I’m his direct competition. And it doesn’t hurt to be just the kind of woman he’s been looking for.

I’m gonna flash you these legs, Weston Conrad.

I’m gonna wear low-cut shirts and micro-mini skirts.

I’m gonna dazzle you with wit and conversation and kiss those lips like they’re exactly what I’ve been waiting for.

So don’t hate me when you figure out my secret.

You understand, right? You’re Mr. Corporate and this is just business.

When I was reading Mr. Perfect (The Misters #1), I thought this would be a series about a bunch of rich dudes finding their lucky ladies who would be the recipients of all the hot sex, love and devotion they could handle - and in some cases, more than they could handle.

I should've known better.

With each book that takes us deeper into the Misters world - with each Mister we learn more about - we realize that what was originally thought to be a simple office romance series is so, so much more.

It all goes back to "that night" - the one that changed all five Misters' lives. A little bit more about that night and the events surrounding it come out in Mr. Corporate, including the fact that Weston Conrad is still keeping secrets.

But, even before he was Mr. Corporate, West was a boy who liked a girl. So, even after things went to crap, he still had her. But West and Tori's relationship was anything but a fairytale. It was passionate and volatile and intense. They loved each other so much. And sometimes they kind of hated each other. And when Tori takes something of West's they part for good. Until now.

Events of the past are colliding with events of the present and it's bringing all the Misters together again. It's bringing West and Tori together again too, and they have different opinions on whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. They fight worse than they ever did before. They have all the years of loving each other together with the bitterness of being apart in recent times fueling them. They handle it differently too.

Tori wasn't my favorite person. She fights dirty. She aims low with her insults and she likes to physically smack Weston around. No matter how you paint it, I can't get behind a character like that. Admittedly, her past is full of some truly horrific stuff. But, at some point, every person makes a choice on how to live their lives. Tori's past not only shaped the type of relationship she wanted with West, but it also shaped how she fought with him. She could've decided to be different. To be better. But she didn't. And that made me angry.

Weston, on the other hand - he might be my favorite Mister so far. This man kinda reminds me of Julie Huss, actually. He has this master plan for his life that includes Tori. He chooses to reveal bits and pieces at key moments. Until finally the entire picture of the life he had envisioned with Tori is laid out, and you realize he's even more amazing than you had thought. West has loved Tori forever. Even when he hated her, he loved her. And he never gave up.

More and more the Mister world is intersecting with the Rook and Ronin world. And as a huge fan of the R&R series, it's so exciting to see. Although many secrets were revealed in Mr. Corporate, for certain, there are still many more to come. Thankfully, there are still two books left...

Weston takes off his tie and begins unbuttoning his shirt. My eyes open a little wider. I watch every move. The way his fingers flip each button loose. The way his tanned and muscular chest flashes me as the shirt comes apart. That stupid Corporate grin on his face.

I sigh with frustration just as he takes the whole thing off and starts going for his belt.

Will Weston Conrad strip naked to swim?

Oh, yeah. You bet your ass he will. I called him Naked Man back when we were together. He has a thing for it.

“Come on, Tori. Let’s swim. You don’t need a suit. I’ve seen your goods.”

“First of all,” I say, crossing my arms and maintaining eye contact as the pants come down, “I’m not ‘goods.’ Second of all, I’m not giving you the pleasure of seeing me naked after you’ve been such an asshole.”

“When was I an asshole?”

He’s kidding, right? “All the time.”

“I’m just truthful, Victoria. You just can’t handle the truth.”

“I’m tired of fighting—” But I stop talking. Because yeah, he still looks amazing in those black boxer briefs he’s partial to.

“Did you miss him?” West asks.

“Who?” I say, forcing myself to look up at his face.
“Naked Man?”

I almost laugh, but catch myself just in time. “Weston—” But before I can get anything else out, he’s crossing the floor, I’m backing up, my hands are up, warning him to stay away, and I bump into the couch and fall back.

He stops in front of me, his goddamned bulge staring me in the face.

At least he’s not hard.

Ooops. Spoke too soon.

“Weston, stop it.”

“Come on,” he says, extending his hand. “We’re going to the beach.”

“I’m not getting naked with you.”

“I don’t need you naked. Your fucking skirt is so short you could wade in up to your thighs.” He shakes his hand at me, urging. “Come on.”

I close my eyes so I can stop staring at the bulge, stop imagining his hard cock and all the ways I’ve been intimate with it in the past, and take his hand, letting him pull me to my feet. His arm slips around my back and he pulls me into his chest. God, I can feel his fucking dick against my hips.
“Victoria,” he says in my ear. “You’ve missed me,” he says, switching to the other one.

I wait for what comes next. It’s a thing he always did with me when I was on the verge of something. Panic, or sadness, or whatever comes with all the things we went through.

He would stand behind me, both hands squeezing my shoulders. His mouth would go to work on my earlobe, and my neck, and my mouth. Then his fingers would dip down into my bra to squeeze my breasts and pinch my nipples.
We’d always have sex after that. Always. It drove me crazy.

But before I can say anything—No, we’re not doing that, or, Back off, mister, I’m not yours—he backs away and he’s heading for the door, tugging me along.

I sigh, missing his attention so much in that unused moment.

(Synopsis) Charm is the key to the world.

Charisma, magnetism, sex appeal—that ‘it’ factor that can’t be described.

Nolan Delany has it is spades.

The infamous Mr. Romantic.

And maybe he is out of my league… But I’m going to give it the old college try anyway. Because I didn’t travel two thousand miles for a job interview at his request just to be put out like trash.

Don’t underestimate me, Mr. Delaney.

I’m really not as innocent as I look.

What would you do if you had a Ivy league degree, no job prospects, and only a short time left before your savings ran out? Would you take an interview in another state? Would it matter if the interview was presented to you in a less-than-traditional fashion? Or if it was being offered at a desert resort owned by a renowned womanizer once accused of a horrible crime?

All good questions that Ivy asks herself, and yet, her humdrum life as a PK (or, Preacher's Kid) seems to be a worse thing to her. I can't really blame her. Ivy finally has the chance to go after something big being offered by someone interesting and sexy, and she's ready to take her life to the next level.

I need to put myself out there and take risks. Welcome to Opposite Ivy Weekend. Where every time I get the urge to say no to unfamiliar things, I will say yes. And every time I get the urge to say yes to familiar things, I will say no.

Nolan - for all his money and connections and unwanted notoriety - is also stuck in a rut, just like Ivy.  His just looks a little different. He's chasing a dream he's not sure is attainable anymore, given his past. He wants people to take him seriously in his businesses. He wants his father's approval again. He wants a woman to want him and believe in him, despite his transgressions.

I promise you - Nolan Delaney will not be your favorite person at first. He's used to women falling at his feet, and when Ivy exhibits a backbone and the ability to think for herself, he responds with epic douchebaggery flair. He uses Ivy's attraction to him to try and wear her down, and yet, somewhere along the way, he realizes that perhaps he should slow down a bit and see what he might be missing. And what he could have, as long as she will give him the time of day now.

"Defiance is defined as open resistance. But, a seductive man knows how to turn resistance into reluctance into acceptance."

Without a doubt, Nolan's sexual proclivities will probably be the one thing most talked about in regards to Mr. Romantic. They definitely push the line, and when we get to see them in practice, it's a bit shocking and startling.

But, please know - this is NOT a book about an erotic relationship that tests the boundaries of propriety. THIS is a book about trust. And loyalty. And love. It punctuates the fact that these things don't always have to take a traditional shape in order to exist. It's also about exorcising the past, by whatever means necessary, in order to move on with your future, and how that is absolutely possible with the right people by your side.

For those of you familiar with J.A. Huss' books, be on the lookout for a few Easter eggs that will most definitely bring out your inner fangirl. Characters from another of her series are mentioned, and it's clear that we will see much more of them later on in the Misters series.

Remember how I said that Nolan wasn't my favorite person in the beginning of the book? By the very end, I was very solidly on Team Nolan. I love how J.A. Huss can win me over, and she does it time and time again. I'm looking forward to more of that in Mr. Corporate, due out in just a few short weeks.

“What do you think so far? Do I live up to the hype?”

“Not really.”

“No?” He chuckles as we walk past the pool. “Why not?”

The whole thing becomes surreal for me in that moment. The emptiness of the resort. The heat and the sun. I am two thousand miles from home and I’m clutching Mr. Romantic’s elbow like we are lovers taking an evening stroll.

“You’re a little bit quiet so far.”

“Is that right?”

“Your sister is the bigger personality. I’m surprised she wasn’t accused of something inappropriate in college. I think she has it in her.”

Nolan laughs. “That’s kind of true. She’s a handful to most, but she’s been good to me. She’s very protective.”

“She called you dangerous.”

“What?” He stops walking and looks down at me. “When?”

“Today. She told me to stay away from you. Didn’t you know that?”

“What exactly did she tell you?” His mood has changed. Not a lot, but there’s an edge to his words.

“She said something like…” I struggle to remember her exact words, but can’t. I shouldn’t have said anything. He’ll probably confront her and use me as an example.

“Like?” Nolan pushes.

“You’re not romantic. Something like that. They called you Mr. Romantic when all that stuff happened because it was a joke.”

“And the dangerous part?” His words are low and when I look up at him, the easygoing expression has changed into something else.

“I don’t know why she said it. She was telling me to stay away from you all day. And I was angry that she was so dismissive of me. She said I was here by mistake. So I told her I was going to do my best to get the job anyway. And while I agree those men you hired are far more qualified, it was not fair of her to dismiss me so quickly. I’m not as innocent and inexperienced as I look, Mr. Delaney. I have ideas and I’m smart. Hiring everyone in the applicant pool but me was about the most humiliating thing I’ve ever experienced.”

Nolan continues our walk, silent for a few seconds. “You’re lucky.”

“I am?” I ask, a small laugh escaping. “How so?”

“You’re lucky that you’ve never been humiliated the way I have.”

Oh, shit. Way to go, Ivy.

“Do you think I’m dangerous?” Nolan asks, staring down at me in that way he does.

It makes me uneasy. “Maybe.”

“You’re willing to take that chance?”

“Maybe.”

“Well, good,” Nolan says. “Let’s have a nice dinner and I’ll tell you why I sent Claudette away and kept you here against her wishes.”

He did what?

My heart starts to beat faster. Why would he do that? Maybe Claudette was right to warn me? There’s hardly anyone here at the resort. Especially now that all the construction people have left for the day. The main pool is empty when we pass, and even the desk clerks are missing when we enter the lobby.

The dining room has two couples eating dinner and Nolan greets them by name as he leads me to the rear part of the restaurant. Back into a dimly lit room with a single table, white linen tablecloth flowing over the sides. Candle glowing in the center. Set for two.

“This is… unexpected.” My mind is filled with possibilities. And even though I came here with the intention of getting his full attention, possibly losing my virginity to him—and even though I’ve talked myself into feeling ready to take on a man like him, both professionally and personally—I am not excited. I am suddenly scared.

There’s not enough people. There’s not enough noise. There’s not enough of anything to make me forget just who I’m having dinner with.

Mr. Romantic. A man accused of raping a woman ten years ago. A man who was not prosecuted for that crime because the woman died before she could testify. A man who might be guilty.

Nolan pulls out a chair and waits for me to sit, sliding it in perfectly the way a gentleman does, before taking his seat across from me. “I like the unexpected, Miss Rockwell. Get used to it.”

I am in way over my head.

(Synopsis) Wanting the perfect man doesn’t make me crazy. I just know what I like.

A powerful billionaire in a suit wasn’t even my first choice. McAllister Stonewall was never on my radar, I didn’t even know he existed.

But I do now.

His hands are all over me at work. The heat of his chest pressing against my bare back as he bends me over the desk is the only thing on my mind.

He is my most forbidden desires unleashed. He is my new secret obsession. He is my Mr. Perfect.

Until the moment I realize… There’s no such thing as perfect.

What is "perfect" to you? Is it some abstract concept, or do you have a specific vision in your head of what the perfect man, the perfect house, the perfect life, etc. looks like? Mr. Perfect brings up the question of whether there is anything wrong with striving for perfection, or is "perfect" just a myth?

Deep thoughts aside, I loves me a good office romance. Mr. Perfect is that, and more. It's funny and mysterious and a little sad and a lot dirty. After I finished reading, I wanted Zombie Dust beer and a sheepdog and a dress with a zipper over my ass. I wanted a slide at work and celebrity friends and I wanted to give my husband and his friends super cool code names. And I wanted to read this book over and over and over again.

Ellie is floundering. She feels stuck in a dead-end job and the boss's son, who could've been her boyfriend, was just shipped off to work in their China office. The Worst Day Ever is capped off by the arrival of the boss's OTHER son, who turns out to be pretentious, irritating and too hot for his own damn good.

But the other thing about McAllister Stonewall is, he doesn't allow Ellie to hide her head in the sand anymore. He makes her uncomfortable and he gets her to talk about things she would've preferred to keep hidden. While doing all that, he makes her feel beautiful and wanted and talented. Mac's methods may be a bit... unconventional. But, he sees Ellie as exactly the change he needed in his life, and he's determined to make her his.

Mac comes with his own baggage. And, most of it is wrapped up in events that happened a decade before that also involve four of his closest friends. As you might've figured, these five men adopted code names - Mr. Perfect. Mr. Romantic, Mr. Corporate, Mr. Mysterious and Mr. Match. Seriously - how cool is that? The reason why they needed these names, however, is not so cool.

If you're at all familiar with the awesome JA Huss, then you know that she loves a good twist in a story. You know - that point in a story, usually toward the end, where you go...

The thing about Mr. Perfect is, that didn't happen here. Oh, sure there were surprise revelations and secrets that came out, but nothing like what we've seen from this author lately. Well, not yet anyway. Keep in mind, there is still four books left in this series, and although Mr. Perfect can be read as a standalone, I know this back story that came to light is going to build and build and get more crazy as each book comes out. And, we've been promised a huge surprise when we get to the final book - Mr. Match. So, you know Joey's face above? Let's just put a pin in that, shall we?

For now, start with Mr. Perfect. It's office romance at its best. It's sweet, it's seductive, it's secretive. It. Is. Awesome.

“We own most of the land in the Tech Center. My father bought up the land thirty years ago before any of this was here. And we lease it out.”

Jesus. What kind of money is that? I can’t even begin to understand it.

“Anyway,” Mac says, standing. “I’m waiting in here for a reason.”

“Is that right?” I stand up too, but my heart beats a little faster when I take him in. He’s wearing a dark gray suit today, a blue shirt that is so light it’s barely a color, and another brilliant cerulean-blue tie that makes his matching eyes shine as they stare into mine.

I don’t know why, but I step backwards. His full attention on me suddenly feels more like a force than a look. He steps forward, hands reaching for me. I bump against the wall, no escape, and then he fists the front of my blouse and rips it open, revealing my silk cami.

My mouth opens in surprise.

He rips the cami apart too. And then, with one forceful whoosh, both garments are lying in a puddle of fabric on the floor.

“What are you doing?” I yell.

The intense stare turns to a boyish smile. “I’d like you topless for breakfast. And I get to call the shots for our dates.”

“Why do I even bother with you? Just why?” I refuse to cross my arms and cover my tits. Fuck him. Just fuck him. “Every time I start to think you’re not a pig, you go and do something like this.”

“It’s fun, right?” His smile never cracks.

“No,” I say. “It’s humiliating.”

“Your tits are nice, Ellie. You should not be ashamed of them.”

“I’m not ashamed of them—”

“Good. Because I’d like to stare at them while we have coffee and discuss our date tonight.”

A knock comes from Mac’s office and I might have a panic attack that someone will come in and find me bare like this.

“Hold that thought,” Mac says, leaning down to kiss my lips. “Breakfast is here. Sit,” he says, pushing on my shoulders until I slump into the window seat again. “I’ll be right back.”

And then he enters his office, pulling our connecting door closed.

I listen to the conversation in there as I look down at my clothes. What the hell was he thinking? The cami is dust. Ripped straight down the middle. At least the silk button-up shirt is only missing all the buttons. I can probably tie it around my waist to make it out to the parking lot, but—

There’s a jingle of a cart and plates. We have… room service? What kind of company has room service?

I guess I’m not all that surprised they have it up here. We have several restaurants on campus. The Atrium has a cafeteria. Maybe this came from the cafeteria?

Mac is laughing on the other side of the door, then I hear a polite thank you just before the sound of a closing door.

The connecting door swings open again and Mac is there, a wide grin on his face. “I hope you like pancakes.”

“This is not happening.”

“Oh, this is happening, Miss Hatcher. You are sitting here.” He points to the middle of the window seat as he pushes the cart towards me.

“I have no clothes, Mac. You ripped my cami. I’m going to have to tie that over-shirt on and go home to change. In fact,” I say, reaching down to get my blouse and pull myself together, “I’m not coming back. I’m done. Just when I think you’re a human, you act like an ape.”

“Would you just relax, Ellie?” He rips the shirt from my hands, balls it up, and then tosses it in the air, where it arcs perfectly and sails into the new trashcan that matches the desk. “Three points,” he says.

“It’s like you live in your own world or something. I think it’s funny that you accused me of living in some delusional fantasy, but you, Mr. Stonewall, you’re a raving lunatic who thinks the world is his asylum.”

“I’m going to take that as a compliment. Now sit. I’ve got it all under control.”

RELEASE DAY REVIEW: Rock

Rock, by JA Huss
Publish Date:
March 7, 2016
Publisher: self-published
Format: ARC, provided by the author
Genre: adult romantic suspense
To Buy: Amazon

Rating: 5 STARS

(Synopsis) My American Dream just shattered and they think I did it on purpose. They have sentenced me to hell by sending me back to the last place I want to be. They have people watching me twenty-four-seven. They want the truth about how my band mates died, and they’re going to get it, no matter what.

No matter how hard I fight. No matter how many times I deny it. No matter what it takes, the truth is going to catch up with me.

I am Rowan Kyle Saber. I am RK. I am Rock. Ex-lead-singer for Son of a Jack. Ex-addict, ex-friend, ex-boyfriend, ex-brother… and presently in denial.

Welcome to Grand Lake, Colorado, where all my nightmares started. Welcome to the past. Welcome to the present. Welcome to RK’s fucked up life.

The only thing holding me together is her. But even that might be a lie.

Oh what a twisted web JA Huss weaves. Judging by the cover, you might think ROCK is one type of story. But, I promise you, the twisted road it takes will lead you someplace very different. And, that's the beauty of this book. Every chapter brings a new question and a new assumption of what's going on with our hero, Rowan Kyle, and I promise you will be surprised when you get to the end.

It's rare that a book truly surprises me anymore. I can usually see the twist coming a long way off. I can usually predict who the bad guy is and how he did it before hitting the 50% mark. JA Huss has honed her skills of fictional deception, though, to a fine point. I swear, I didn't know who was who until RK did too, and that was freaking awesome. I loved that I was constantly guessing and wondering what was really going on.

Rock was fast paced and exciting. There wasn't always action, but that didn't diminish the hum of excitement that stayed with me the whole way through. The excitement came in the form of the desire to figure out the mystery - the desire to see just a little bit of happiness in RK's life.

You will see early on that RK has not had a good couple of years. Starting prom night, it's been one horrendous event after the other. RK is not happy. He's lost friends, family and loved ones. And, how his livelihood - his band - is gone as well. RK's life is falling apart, and now he has to go home and face the demons of his past too. I wanted nothing more than for something good to happen to this guy, because he totally deserves it after going through so much crap.

But, with the picture that JA Huss paints, even when something good happens to RK, you wonder if it's real. So does he. And for good reason. It's very clear that things are not as they seem.

Despite the title and the cover art, there is not a ton of music in Rock. There's no band action. No concerts or the usual scenes you get in rock star books. That's because this is not your typical rock star book. The focus is more on RK's past, how it's affected his present and how his present is coming back to bite him in the ass.

I can't give you many more details without giving away serious spoilers. The only details you need to know are these. 1.) Rock is a twisty, suspenseful ride that will keep you guessing every step of the way. 2.) There is a really incredible romance threaded through that will keep all you romantics very happy. 3.) The action is actiony and the sexy times are sexy.

JA Huss is the mistress of the twistiness. There's always some moment in her books where things take a left turn, but in Rock, those moments come almost at the end of every chapter. You will root for RK to get to the bottom of things and to find that slice of happiness with the one person who can give it to him. And, when you finish, you will want to read it again right away with your newfound perspective on board.
