Brody Markham has endured a nightmare, spending the last five years in prison and losing everything that was dear to him. Now he’s back home, trying to survive in a world he doesn’t recognize anymore. While his family and friends desperately try to reach through to him, he shelters himself further and further away from their love.

Alyssa Myers has worked her entire life to distance herself from the luxurious and privileged lifestyle in which she was raised. Running her non-profit agency, The Haven, she is content to spend her days helping abused animals find sanctuary, which fulfills her in a way that money just can’t buy.

Maybe it’s that she recognizes in Brody some of the same characteristics she sees in her homeless wards, but Alyssa is powerless to stop her personal quest to make Brody whole again.

While Brody struggles to surface from the darkness, Alyssa tries to protect her heart in case he’s not willing to accept the light that she offers him.

OMG - I LOVE Sawyer Bennett. Her characters and her books suck me in and make me want to call off work so I don't have to put it down until I'm done. Make it a Double was gripping and sexy and sweet and inspiring. And Brody was one of Sawyer's best boys ever.

Brody has spent the past 5 years of his life in prison. Now, he's out, but everything is different, including him. He can't open up to anyone and he certainly doesn't think he's capable of feeling things like joy and happiness anymore. Alyssa represents a part of his past that he is trying to forget, and yet, he keeps running into her. Soon, he starts noticing that there's so much more to Alyssa than what he originally thought.

Brody is one sad guy. He used to be on an impressive track - med school, rich girlfriend from a powerful family - he was poised to really be somebody. Then, a car accident that killed someone derailed everything. Now, he works as a bartender at his brother's bar, he lives in a 500 square foot apartment. His only visitor is his parole officer. Everyone pretty much avoids him because he scowls all the time and is just generally very grrr.

Brody was such a fantastic character. I felt so much for him and his situation. You could tell that he was struggling with pulling his life back together again. There was a scene between he and Alyssa at the end of On the Rocks (Last Call #1) where he blew up at her, and you just knew in that moment that there was more going on there. Brody's going on some preconceived notions about Alyssa and her family's money, and he ropes her into the group of privileged, spoiled rich girls with no integrity and no drive. Much like his ex who screwed him over in a bigger way than what originally meets the eye.

Alyssa is a sweet girl who is just trying to use her money for good by running a no-kill animal shelter. She offers Brody a chance to serve his community service by working there. Initially he flat out refuses her charity. But when he helps her out of a bind and has the chance to see what she's really made of, he changes his mind.

I loved the tension and chemistry between Brody and Alyssa. I also loved that Brody didn't make the path for them to get together very smooth and easy. It was still hard for him to get close to her, and it takes awhile for him to trust her. Once they do get together, though, their romance is sweet as they heal each others' wounds. Alyssa doesn't have a good relationship with her family, and she's dealing with a stalker ex-boyfriend that starts to scare the crap out of her.

The ending is exciting and had me on the edge of my seat. Brody is all alpha male at his core, and that is never more evident than when he admits he is in love with Alyssa. When she's in danger, he flies into action, and this is the kind of guy that makes reading books so much fun for me. When Brody drops a bomb on his family, Alyssa stands by her man, which makes her the kind of girl that I have always wanted to be like. I certainly hope this is not the end of the Last Call series, because this is quickly becoming one of my favorites.
