(From Goodreads) Virginity.
Bliss Edwards is about to graduate from college and still has hers. Sick of being the only virgin among her friends, she decides the best way to deal with the problem is to lose it as quickly and simply as possible-- a one-night stand. But her plan turns out to be anything but simple when she freaks out and leaves a gorgeous guy alone and naked in her bed with an excuse that no one with half-a-brain would ever believe. And as if that weren't embarrassing enough, when she arrives for her first class of her last college semester, she recognizes her new theatre professor. She'd left him naked in her bed about 8 hours earlier.
So, a girl walks into a bar and sees a guy reading Shakespeare. Sounds like the beginning of a really funny joke, right? Actually, I bet you could make it into a really funny joke. But, in this case, this is actually the beginning of a really great book.
Bliss (yes, that's her real name) is one of those really intense girls who is so serious about her work and school (in this case, theater school) that she forsakes boys, parties and all things fun. Luckily, her pushy extroverted BFF/roomie is there to take her out of her comfort zone. Enter, Garrick. The man with a sexy accent who can save Bliss from her boring, virginal self. If she lets him.
I've read some books where the student/teacher relationship is more skeevy than sexy. It's a very fine line to walk, isn't it? It's a bit of a taboo subject, even when the student/teacher in question is a college-aged pairing. In Losing It, there was no skeeve. No shudders. No ick factor. Cora Carmack paces the story just right so that Garrick and Bliss meet, form a connection, encounter work-related barriers and overcome them in just the right way at just the right time.
Garrick is bloody wonderful. I love the image of a guy reading Shakespeare in a bar. What guy wouldn't be drop-dead sexy doing that? Not to mention, one with a British accent. Carmack made him the perfect "teacher." He's close in age to Bliss. He tries again and again to deny the relationship. He gets pissed when it seems he has a right to, and he is sweet when he doesn't need to be. Garrick give me a huge case of the "sighs."
I have a hard time believing that Bliss would hit the skids when she has an unbelievably hot guy naked in her bed and they both were so ready for more. WTH? I wonder what her theater class would've been like the next day if she had actually gone through with the deed...
Without giving too much away, I thought things were set up absolutely perfectly for some major drama at the end. I was waiting for it. I was ready. And... it never came. Not necessarily a BAD thing, just very unexpected.
Faking It (Losing It #2) is one of my must-reads for the summer. I can't wait to read Cade's HEA, because he sure deserves one.
A guy reading a book in bar? I would have been all over that!
ReplyDeleteSIGH! I did love this book! And yes, Garrick is super dreamy! Though, Cade... stole my heart. Faking It was just as awesome! Carmack is brilliant!
